A number of autistic fans of Sonic -- like CWC -- were kids in the 90s. To them this movie could be a nostalgic look back at a time when not much was expected of them, and they could freely spend their days going fast with sanic instead of having to do "adulting."

So just as Sonic was created in a Poochie-esque way to compete with Mario, this movie is being made to compete with the Pikachu movie?

It’s more than just these two movies.
A sequel to Detective Pikachu is already in pre-pro and WB is talking about either a Pokémon or a Nintendo CU. Pikachu is already miles ahead.
While no official word on a sequel to Sonic or a crossover movie called Detective Sonichu has appeared, we still have until November for
    A) A complete redo on the CGI Sonic, prepare for Sonic fanboys to scream “it’s still in post!” for 6 months.
    B) A massive ad campaign (with Paramont begging the fast food chain Sonic to put the blue abortion on their cups)
    C) An announcement of a sequel (probably in September or October)

    A) Major studios almost never change their CGI on large scale especially not on the basis of fan outcry. I believe this was a doomed project from its conception, there was a reason why they held off on showing what exactly sonic looked like, I think deep down everyone knew sonic would look like a failed coat hanger abortion.

    B) This is most likely the case, the film's going to need a lot of advertising to make up for the negative press. Ironically the advertising is the very thing that spawns the negative press. I'm certainly looking forward to riffing off of whatever half-assed product placements that come about though this. On a related note, I'm sure Chris will just eat up the ad campaigns despite his disdain for the film; I don't think would turn down a greasy Wendy's™ Speed Burger™ adorned with the face of his "life long hero" on it.

    C) This movie isn't going to do well, sequels (most of the time) only come out of successful films. WB is confident that Detective Pikachu will do well, I don't doubt it, what I do doubt is this film making a sequel on the grounds that its rival will do the same. The only thing I can think of is that Paramount might buy the rights to another video game franchise and release a movie around the time the Detective Pikachu sequel comes out, that is if Paramount doesn't cut its losses with video game movies from this film and never make another one again.

Computer generated image hair doesn't naturally move with the environment correctly still to fool perception of it by our eyes, plus, blue is going to already make it look like a bad blend job with the background just based on the fact it's the color of a matte key screen tone. I'm sure this is no more than three quarters rendered at this point compared with the final total number of effects hours that will be devoted to it at the end of the production, at most. But yes, looks pretty fake, right now.

Jim Carrey wasn't irrelevant until 15 years ago too, but now I'm just nitpicking on the naysayers points that I tend to agree with anyway and will cease doing so.

Chris reacted to this movie -- he doesn't like the shoes.

Why can't they just -- oh I don't know -- make sanic look like he does in the games?

I wouldn't care about this at all normally, but it really bothers me that this change is pandering to and validating Chris.

If they fuck it up worse though it will make it all the more sweeter.

For context, this is Sonic's official voice actor since 2010.

From the director of Detective Pikachu:

“There’s no right or wrong to how you make one of these movies. It would be very difficult for us to redesign anything. We spent a year designing all the characters ahead of shooting so that we could get it all right. If we were off by an inch on Pikachu, [actor] Justice Smith’s performance would go right out the window. For us, it would have been impossible — but that doesn’t mean they can’t do it. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes — they’re in a difficult spot.”

I would argue that there is in fact a wrong way to make one of these movies and were looking at it.

John Mathieson [Director of photography for Pikachu] —a long-time Ridley Scott associate whose credits include Gladiator, Logan, and, now, the movie with the Big, Moist Tongue Pokémonopened up to Newsweek this weekwith a comparison between the two movies: “If all we’re talking about is how these two films look, our film is better than Sonic the Hedgehog. And I’m sorry, I don’t care who I upset by saying that.” Mathieson (who also notes that he was offered the [director of photography] job on Sonic, and is now delighted that he turned it down) credits the difference to the decision to shoot Detective Pikachu on film, rather than digitally, granting his CG monstrosities a richness and depth of color that the Sonic movie’s apparently lacked.

Yeah ok guy, the problem with Sonic is that it wasn’t shot on film..........

This is what I like to call the Art School Fallacy, just because something is shot on film/in black and white doesn't make it good.

I remember there was an old Nostalgia Critic video where he claimed that CGI artists reused animations for different films saying something to the extend that you can take a dinosaur in one film and make it an alien in another with CGI. That- that's not how it works.

This is what Sonichu would really look like if the dimensional merge happens, not just a yellow Sonic recolor with a Pika tail.

The Sonic movie has been delayed to February 2020 to give enough time to fix the design. For once, Chris has won the battle.
(On a side note, I don't like how the release date is that close to my birthday.)

Yes, February is the traditional 'window into cinematic hell release' schedule portion of the calendar. If you are moved there for any reason, it's the studio basically washing their hands of your wretched little production and getting ready to write off the incoming losses to the bottom line of the company while executive producers duck for cover for their future career prospects going forward, so as to not be left holding the bag for the bomb detonation about to go off in somebody's face.

On the plus side, it's now right around Christian Love Day 2020 as a release, in fact, they might sell more tickets if they just name it that, now that I think about it...
