Guilty Pleasures

Any '50s B-Movie.

 

Pretty much all of the Pokemon films. I'm not that keen on the anime, even though I did watch it as a kid. I love the one with Giratina; I watched it illegally at least once a week for ages when I was younger. I haven't watched one since the Zoroark one though. I wanted to watch the Musketeers one but I never got round to it.

 

Rick Astley, but I guess I don't keep it a secret anymore.


My real one is Doctor Who.

 

Despite its stupid premise, I found this to be my guilty pleasure:

 

I only knew one kid who liked Pokemon and didn't also like Digimon.

 

I'll unironically watch the occasional Kung-Fu movie.

 

I actually liked the first movie with Mewtwo, and I liked the one with Entei (which I personally think is the best Pokemon movie). The Lugia one wasn't that great in hindsight, but I don't get why some people say the first Pokemon movie is one of the worst movies of all time. I mean, for what it was, it was pretty good. I can still watch Pikachu's Vacation and enjoy it, and I still cry a little during the incredibly cheesy scene where Ash 'dies'.

Personally, Joe Vs. The Volcano is my personal favorite guilty pleasure. It's a bad movie, but it's self-aware enough to be entertaining. It's funny how it feels as though the actors are taking some scenes completely seriously, and are just goofing around during some scenes. When they get to the island with the volcano the movie just descends into campy-bliss similar to 60's Batman, and it's awesome. The opening scene is actually really good, so it makes a viewer believe that the movie is going to be a lot better than it actually is.

 

Basically anyone who says Pokemon the First Movie is even in the top ten worst movies of all time hasn't seen any Pokemon movies other than it and maybe the second and third Pokemon movies. There's at least ten Pokemon movies worse than the first one.

 

Out of curiosity, what is the worst Pokemon movie?

Also, I remember a lot of people complaining about the first Digimon movie. Again, I thought it was decent and I know a number of Digimon fans who watched it and liked it (we actually watched it during a new years eve party one time, which was awesome since we were drunk and stoned), so I was surprised when my sister showed me Nostalgia Critic's review where he said that the fans hated it and that it was one of the worst films of all time. Yeah, it was incredibly cheesy, but so are a lot of childhood films.

Personally, "Worst film evaaarrr" gets used way too much online, same with "Best film evaaarr".

Pretty much this. And going back to Nostalgia Critic's reviews, when he did Phantom of the Opera, even though they gave good points, and I fully acknowledge those problems, I personally still like the 2004 film. Not because I loved it as a teenager, but more on a production level since it's a well-made film in terms of cinematography, costuming, and sets. The actors are honestly hit-and-miss, and there's some pacing hiccups and some change-ups from the play, but it doesn't take away too much from the enjoyment.

 

Funny you should mention Phantom Of The Opera. I actually haven't watched any of the movies, but I saw the live theater production in Edmonton and bought a DVD of the performance (they filmed it and sold it after the show) and I thought it was great.

It seems as though a person might be better off reading a more serious review of a movie in a newspaper or something, rather than watch a comedian searching for funny things to say about a movie while providing what may or may not be his honest opinion on it. Somebody once told me "You like what you like, and you don't like what you don't like. Who cares what anyone else has to say", while the philosophers of the past used to say "People aren't born with opinions on what is good or bad. When people don't have opinions, they craft their opinions about what's good or bad from people who claim to have well-developed opinions,". I think that this is probably why listicles on 'best things' and 'worst things' are so prevalent online. The new generation has basically been raised to get their opinions on things from guys making Youtube videos and top ten lists, instead of professional critics writing short articles detailing their complex opinion on films, music, plays and cartoons.

 

I still remember laughing so hard that I got abs when Tom Green swung that baby around by the umbilical cord. Tom Green was an avante-garde genius.

 

Nick Phillips' Criminally Insane "series" is good cheesy fun for what it is - hour long, incredibly low budget vignettes of a morbidly obese woman killing people. Cinema Snob reviewed them both at one point.

Another guilty pleasure of mine that is mainly nostalgia driven is the 2000 film Thomas And The Magic Railroad. I recently re-watched it and I remember that I enjoyed it unironically as a small kid back then (I was a fan of Thomas The Tank Engine and Shining Time Station when I was little), but now I watch it for the lulz. Both the film itself and its production history is a delightfully spectacular train wreck (pun intended).

Apparently the film was so bad and its production history so troubled that it drove Mara Wilson to quit acting completely, and led to the Thomas franchise being bought out by a company called HIT Entertainment, who made the show more merchandise-driven and simplified even by children's show standards.

One thing that was legitimately good about the film though was the soundtrack. Especially Atomic Kitten's techno-styled cover of The Loco-Motion. I remember that shortly after the movie came out, a few of the pop stations in my area would play the song on occasion. It even spilled over into the local oldies station who would play the Little Eva and Grand Funk Railroad versions more often in their rotation for a while.

 

Master of the Flying Guillotine. Watch that ASAP, it's got a bunch of nifty fight scenes and the most ridiculously awesome weapon you'll ever see.
