Godzilla and Friends

Lately, I have been binge watching a bunch of Godzilla movies while crocheting and I have been loving every bit of it. There are most of the Showa era ones on Youtube as well as a few from later generations. There is also a majority of the Gamera movies including the ones that haven't been commented on by MST3K.

I am surprised there isn't a thread on this.

I'm watching Godzilla: Tokyo SOS and that has to be probably the lamest title since when has it not been an SOS in Tokyo when Godzilla attacks? That pretty much describes every movie.

Also, after like, the third Godzilla attack or so, hasn't the Japanese military not learned that missles and stuff don't work? Like, I get it when they use them to lure Godzilla somewhere like to fight the other monster, but seriously? Though it is pretty funny that in later movies, the Japanese military has their own unit dedicated to monitoring and stopping kaiju.

 

The Heisei era Gamera movies are on Youtube, I might watch them next.

 

I saw the MST4k of the original Gamera recently. Kenny is a lot more annoying than I remembered.

 

Did kaiju movies influence mecha stuff?

Also is that moth-y monster a good guy?

 

I think Mothra is a bad guy but I can't remember.

 

Eh, Mothra is more chaotic good, sure, she destroys stuff, but most of the time she tries to stop Godzilla's destruction... and almost always dies in the process then gets reincarnated again via another egg. The twins that are her guardians always creeped me out though. In Japanese they speak super formally I noticed from my limited knowledge of Japanese, like, the kind of Japanese they teach foreigners to speak when visiting the country so not to leave a bad impression on the locals.

Anyways, her theme song that the twins sing has been stuck in my head for the past few days

 

So the "normal" formal kind?

(there's informal, formal, and keigo or really formal)

 

Like I said, the normal formal that they usually teach to tourists. I mean, it makes sense, they are visitors from some Pacific Island so of course they would speak like they teach tourists to speak.

 

Hopefully it's not always "rude" for a foreigner to talk in informal.

(at least they don't expect foreigners to talk in keigo all the time)

 

Yeah, I mean, once you get to know people more and are not complete strangers to then probably yes, but I suppose the twins just wanted to be respectful visiting from their island in the Pacific

Japanese language is pretty notorious for its pragmatics

 

Maybe Japanese like how English is relatively lacking in different tones and honorifics.

(like maybe it feels freeing?)

 

Yeah maybe French and Spanish speakers feel the same way about not having to deal with an informal and formal "you"

Anyways, watching the Heisei era Gamera movies, they are a lot more serious in tone than the Showa era ones, I think that really hurts them a lot since what differentiated Gamera from Godzilla in the Showa era was its more goofy tone.

 

I've played a board game called King of Tokyo
it's a take off of the kaiju movies, with monsters fighting each other

 

That sounds really cool, I looked it up and sounds fun. If only I didn't have a cat that would knock everything over...

Cats are the real kaijus when it comes to board games.

You'd be surprised how much Godzilla influenced Pokemon.

 

I've heard the guy who invented Pokemon was obsessed with bug collecting (which is popular in Japan)
but yeah, a guy from Japan liking Godzilla would be like a guy from the USA liking Westerns, it's stereotypical, but not too odd
