I appreciate your point. The fact is, we can't know. We just can't. You could easily be correct.

But my take on that is Chris really wasn't particularly whateverist - he was parroting parental opinions because that's what got him the positive attention for most of his life.

I don't think Chris' current... thing, is so much a ruse as it is a learned behavior that becomes reflexive. Like I'm an introvert; it's exhausting to me to be near crowds or groups of people for extended periods. But I have an office job where I have to coordinate groups of people and I have to make those people not hate me.

People I've worked with for years think I'm this goofy outgoing guy. Truth is I'm not at all, that's just a way I've learned to get what I want and I've done it for so long it's easier and easier as I go.

Thus it is with Chris.

Going back and reading this now has either aged like a fine wine, or a poltergeist come back to haunt us. I'll let you all be the judges on this one.
