Another "artist" I despise is Humberto Ramos. All of his characters faces/facial expressions make them look like they're retarded. Look at the pic I'm posting with this. Cap looks like he should be drooling on himself. I remember reading the X-men Messiah Complex tpb. The art would be exceptional throughout most of the book, then I'd get to the parts he drew, and it would jar me right out of enjoying the story.

Yeah, all those faces look like they have lockjaw, or got something shoved up their arses unexpectedly.

As usual, Spiderman is saved from a horrible face only by virtue of his mask.

Not even Spider-man can be spared this indignity:

We need to commission this guy to do portraits of lolcows. It's his true calling.

While I agree with both statements, it also really saddens me because Bachalo and Ramos once upon a time were really good at what they did. Granted, they'd never be the next Michael Golden or anything, but in the mid to late 90s, both of them had this really nice style.

Bachalo originally worked on the Vertigo imprint before being picked up by Marvel to work on Generation X. His style had this really interesting hybrid, something harnessing a kind of grafitti style, coupled with the really crunchy stuff you might see from Mark Teixiera - but the most improtant thing was despite being a loose style, he knew how to do proportions. Then somewhere around the late 90s, his work started to get sloppy and his work started to deviate more into a cartoonish style. Coupled with his propensity to cram like 15 panels onto a page, it just got really, really frustrating.

As for Ramos... I suppose he falls into the "wasted potential" category. He started up with DC and had a short run on Impulse, but then he got placed into the Cliffhanger imprint, alongside then-titans of the industry Joe Madureira and J. Scott Campbell. His work was vastly overshadowed, even though between the three of them he was the only one with a work ethic, and never really got a chance or a crowd to really develop. Instead, his work just kind of devolved, trying to play catch-up with the other two and when he was picked up by Marvel in '06, he's been essentially in the ringer for years without really much time to develop a structured style, and in turn his work has become very muddled for it.

I've never seen any of Ramo's early work. I will admit to liking Bachalo's work on Generation X, and it's Age of Apocalypse counterpart. It seems like at some point he stopped giving a shit and is resting on his rep.

The art is saga cam be beautiful most of the time, but I'm still confused as to why Fiona drew the phang meerkat people as gross blob monsters

More of Ken Penders' "art". Look at those arms. those tiny, t-rex arms.

Those proportions in general are insane. Giant head, tiny arm, and normal sized body on the one in black with the same only with a slightly too small body and huge feet and hands on the other. It's like he couldn't decide if he wanted to use sanic, or human proportions so he said fuck it and mixed them in the most retarded way possible.

I can almost tell how those things are supposed to look, but it's clear the artist cares a lot less about them than about, say, the buildings in the background. That's the problem, I think, insufficient catsnake love.

Sonic comics character design in a nutshell.

This could easily become a Liefeld thread.
