nostalgia seems to the explanation for me granted there is also the multitude of designs and types as well. But that is why pokemon interests me, it might be the same for others or maybe not

 

Pokemon was invented by an autistic person. It triggers several autism-attracting fandom factors like a focus on anthropomorphising animals and inanimate objects over interacting with people (yes there are humans, except in Mystery Dungeon, but they're not really important), collection and categorization, visually interesting colors, and the like.

So a better question is what things about Pokemon are there that make it even remotely surprising that autistics are attracted to it?

How is it ever in any way surprising that Sonic or My Little Pony attracts spergs?

The Tubmlr crowd taking to Gem and the Holograms Steven Universe is more surprising, since there was like a 50/50 chance they'd have instead hated on it as a super example of anti-trans hyper misogyny shitNazi micro/macroagression third class.

 

On anthropomorphising animals - perhaps they are drawn to it from developing a negative association with humans/normies; who tend to respond with hostility to odd behavior such as talking to one's self and making weird noises (particularly at a young age before tolerance is fully developed).
