Truth be told, Sonic the Hedgehog is perfect as an unintentional comedy. I mean, just look at this.

I still enjoy the Genesis Sonic games. I play a lot of retro stuff. I think the people like Chris really came around in the early 2000s. That's when you started seeing the now classic DeviantArt OCs.

I always wondered what was up with all the Chadhogs and Whorehog donut steel OCs. I mean, they weren't entirely all over the place back in the early days (yes, I vaguely remember seeing some of the Sonic fandom back then, albeit it was far more focused on the Archie comics and the Saturday morning pseudo-grimdark cartoon), but hooo boy, after Sonic Adventure 2 that shit exploded everywhere. Like it went from furries injecting their personal characters into the Sonic comic setting to over the top self-insertion fantasies that would make Stephanie Meyer cringe.

Like, remember on DA how whorehog fan characters were all over the place? I place the blame squarely on Becky/PurityLF4 for popularizing that trend in particular. You could argue Rouge started it, 'cause she was the first official Sonic character with major boobage and juvenile sex appeal, but Becky was like a deep throating cockroach with how prevalent her OC was on DA during the 2005-2008 years. I think she fucked off for good after some incident where it was revealed she couldn't take critique or criticism very well, if at all.

... Man, those were crazy days. Sonic fandom on DA during the 2004-2011 era (before MLP took over) is both fascinating and horrifying at the same time.

That's what did it. Sonic Adventure. The original games never had serious plotlines. Fat bald guy with big mustache has captured a bunch of animals. Sonic must go save. That was it. Went from that to like a fucking dramatic movie. That's when the people who decided it was okay to be sexually attracted to Rogue the Bat came in to ruin it for anyone normal that was still hanging on. I gotta say I do wonder which person at Sega decided it would be okay to take a serious tone with something like Sonic the Hedgehog.

 

Yeah, you're right. Sonic Adventure was Patient Zero, but Sonic Adventure 2 -especially with Shadow and Rouge being introduced- brought in the metastasized cancer that killed the fandom for normies who just happened to enjoy the games from time to time. I think there've been theories as to why (all of which involve autism, and no, I'm not saying that in a pejorative sense), but the whole thing is just flat-out surreal, if not weird.

Then again, the moment you bring in a more substantial plot to a series that otherwise never really needed one or was used to having one, especially kiddie pool series that they grew up with, people go apeshit full tilt in the 'adult, grimdark'-esque direction. I remember people hyped up Super Mario RPG to be this "big serious Mario game" and stuff, and treated Geno like he was a major character in the plot. Replayed the game not that long ago, and the story is actually pretty shallow and Geno is basically a non-entity after his introduction: it's Mallow that's pretty much the main character plot-wise, since he says the most and does the most. But no, people use the Mandela Effect with Geno for some strange reason.

Arguably, The Thousand Year Door is actually probably the "darkest" Mario spin-off title, but even then I'd liken it on par tone-wise with a Lakia movie, tbbh

 

Hmm reading OP and the rest of this thread, I'm starting to think it's not just Chris that gives Sonic a bad name...

 

Not even close. People like Chris have been around forever. Chris just went further with it than almost anyone else did and put himself out there.

 

Case in point: David Gonterman. There's a reason why some consider him to be the proto-Chris Chan of his day. Without getting into David as a person, his fanworks for pre-Adventure Sonic were not much different from Sonichu, except it all took place in SatAM/Archie Comics setting. He later gained some self-awareness and now does original stuff (after having been driven out of multiple fandoms and practically blacklisted for life in at least one), but he's arguably the most notable example of Sonic fan fuckery in the pre-Chris era.

In fact, one might argue that Chris-Chan was probably the best thing that could've ever happened to Davey-Kins... but that'd be getting way off topic.

 

Let's not forget about AnimatedJames, the pedo with a fart fetist. He's into Sonic, as well.
