Why is the author convinced that SMB3 is "the greatest game ever made?"

Because he's CWC if his idol was Mario instead of Sonic. As for SMB3, it's because he watched it in the Wizard and apparently seeing it early blew his mind.

Objectively, SMB 3 is considered to be among the best Super Mario games ever released. It was one of those "came out at the end of a console's life and wowed everyone with really neat tricks" games. The fact that the NES had such a long lifespan ensured that SMB 3 absolutely blew the original out of the water by comparison, which lends itself well to being the subject of fanboyism.

Vinny (Vinesauce) plugged the book live on his stream a long time ago. I don't have a reference link handy, but I heard him start talking about Brick By Brick while I had Vinesauce open in another window. I can't recall if he sung any great praises for the book, but he basically just said "seeing someone put this much effort into writing something about SMB 3 was inspiring to me". That's kind of a neutral stance on the matter. I mean, I could just as easily say "seeing Chris-chan put this much effort into his sweetheart love quest was inspiring to me" and still laugh at him for being a dumbass.

The plot for Mario 3 is one of the worst imo despite the gameplay being pretty good, don't get how and why is Bob pushing it.

The game is literally a stageplay lol

Do you have any idea what is he streaming at the time or you forgot?

This was a while back, sadly. Like at least a year or two. I haven't watched Vinesauce in a while. :(

Big Land is the best world. It has giant versions of regular enemies in it! Also it's easy.

Too bad Bob when going over almost every enemy in the game during part of the intro decided to skip over the most memorable: Boss Bass, AKA scary one-hit kill threatening you along the bottom of some water stages.

Unlike that stupid pyramid in the desert world. I suck enough at it that I can never get past it. Mario always gets KO'd or runs out of time. I wonder what the author had to say about that level.

It never stops amazing me that he didn't realize how patently psychotic that sounds.

I think he complained about it actually, mainly due to him being ridiculously out of touch with even the genres he liked as a kid and just complaining about New Nintendo.

I looked on the sale page for the book and found this review. Someone's really mad about losing those 6 bucks and is in some serious denial.

That capitalisation puts CWC to shame.

I'm surprised Bob didn't do a Mario retrospective or something like it. It would have been easier to write and not run out of material early.

Can someone who's read the book let me know if he touches on the Gameboy Advance remake and the e-reader cards made for it that helped expand the game with new levels and items? Because it sounds like he ran out of material for the book and discussing that probably could have helped.

In my academic writing class we were taught the correct way to write a research paper. One of the things we were taught was to ask the question "Why does this research paper need to exist?" Followed by an answer to the question at some point.

Which begs the question, was Bob trying to write a research paper.

I think he ran out of things to say very early on in the writing process or knew it would be unreadable.

It's funny really, since you can happily make a book out of Super Mario Bros. 3 if you say focused on the production, design, and advertising it went through. Or hell, wrote it like one of Prima's strategy guides. I just think Bob set out for the goal, knew it wasn't going to be good, and then didn't even try to prove that suspicion wrong.
