Super Mario Bros 3: Brick by Brick - MovieBob

The fact that someone wrote a book about Super Mario Brothers 3 and actually got it published is amazing. I assume it's a vanity book, right?

I mean, a book about the Mario franchise as a whole that is actually well-written could work, similar to the book "Jacked" (which is about the history of the Grand Theft Auto series and its impact on pop culture), but this is just god-awful.

 

A good Mario book: (Explores the history of the series and character, including development and the impact the franchise had on gaming as a whole.)

Ah yes, the book where he literally admits to missing someone's funeral to play Super Mario Bros 3. Why anyone would admit to that, let alone do it in the first place, is beyond me, but it sure is hilarious.

 

I could forgive not going if scheduling and travel made it impossible (especially if the family has traditions that limit how long the body can remain unburied), but unless Mario brought back very strong memories of playing with her, I would think one would try to put off playing vidya out of some sort of respect. Unless grandma beat/fondled him as a kid, I don't see why anyone would do that.

 

It's Nintendo's fault for not including a battery backup saving system. Had he not just beaten the second fortress in world 8, he would have totally gone and paid respects to ol' whats-her-name.

 

I looked in the book for this and it seemed like he went to the funeral, but did not stay for the dinner afterwards. He says some weird rambly shit about funerals though. It's really weird he talks about this at all in the book. He does his boring written LP of the entirety of Mario 3 and randomly talks about his life between some parts, like his grandmother passing away and then being in a car accident. Here's the exerpts.

Also for some reason it did not copy some letters in some of the words. The book is typo-riddled, but not that much.

If you bought a physical copy I doubt it would even do any good as toilet paper.

 

From what I've gleaned of the book, it could actually have worked if some of this stuff had been framed better. If Bob had perhaps framed the death of a family member, coupled with his moving out of his parents' house and starting a new life as the catalyst for him going back and reliving one of his favourite games and the emotional journey these events took him on, I think it actually could have worked rather well. Instead, it sounds like what happened was he was essentially writing up a Let's Play of the game and thought: "Shit! It's not gonna be long enough! Better throw in some anecdotes as well!"
