Sonic fandom (aside from Chris)

Mario's just a fat italian dude. Sonic's a wisecrackin' magic hedgehog with chaos emeralds and all that shit. As a character he's got more to work with.

 

Sonic was always advertised as having 'attitude', so kids and manchildren are likely to think he's super cool.

 

Mario has a moustache while Sonic is a talking animal. Sonic is thus more relatable to memories of peoples' youth rather than as a representation of their authority figure fathers. Further, Sonic has a fat man with a moustache as his primary villain. Take that, dad! This'll teach you to work on your Eggmobile instead of taking me on a walk through Green Hill!

Also Sonic characters have those huge eyes and a wide margin of differently-colored skin/hair around their mouths, making for much more easily read expressions.

 

I always thought that it was because Sonic and his large amount of 'friends' could be easily exploited in fanworks to fit the desires of artists. To put it another way, you see Sonic re-colors (and MLP fan-characters and Pokemon OCs) all the time, but you don't see too many re-colors of Mario. You also have Shadow as the dark brooding guy who fangirls love, Amy the sexy love interest, and a number of other characters that fit into the fantasies that these people have (again, same with Pokemon and MLP), while Mario's cast is comparatively limited.

That being said, I've seen a lot of weird fanart with the non-human characters in the Mario universe (Goombas, Bowser, Yoshi, etc.), mostly with Princess Peach. So, there's probably some weight to the idea that these weird people making weird artwork seem to latch on to talking animals.

Bland as they may be for anyone, they weren't as shit compared to what came after, especially with games like Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom. Considering the Sonic fandom and Sonic Boom, I remember back on the Farms a banned member. Outside of GG sperging, the guy (Lord_Baldurdash. Later changed to Lord_Rainbowdash because of his autistic meltdown in a brony thread) tried to white-knight Sonic Boom despite the fact that game was shit. Wouldn't be surprised if he had a folder of Sonic porn.

Don't forget, they appeal to furries as well. And those in the fandom are going to at least be somewhat furry if they really focus on their OC's.
