Sonic fandom (aside from Chris)

Starting this off with a classic.

 

Let's not forget good old Sonic Brainfart:

 

To be honest, I grew up with Sega and Sonic, but the games were never all that good even in the beginning before all of those awful 3D games came out (other than perhaps the flashy artwork style and some of the music).

Basically all you have to do is hold down the right-arrow on your controller, jump a few times, and you'll usually never have to worry about dying; basically it's just a one-trick pony with the "super speed" being it's only real selling point. It's really just a simplistic game which is "all flash, no substance", not much more than any free flash game you'd find one a website like Kongregate.

That abomination barely even looks like Sonic, looks more like some mutated freak of nature.

 

As ashamed as I am to admit it, I kind of liked the Sonic X anime, and I casually played Sonic and Tails at my grandfather's house from time to time (as he owned a Sega Genesis, whereas I owned a SNES and a PS1 back then).

But yeah, Sonic has pretty much gone to shit, and was never really that good to begin with in all honesty.

 

I never watched any of the cartoons, other than some 90s Sonic Cartoon on Kids WB which was pretty cheesy - it's the one that had the same characters as the "Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine" game; I think it's also slightly infamous on the internet now because of those awful autistic "Youtube Poop" videos.

The 90s Sonic games were just meh... they're all really just very easy and simplistic, though I do like the artwork style better than the SNES Mario games; that and I still think that Sonic CD had some of the best video game music.

What's ironic is that the new "3D" Sonic games are mostly so awful and cheesy I can't imagine any non-autistic individual older than 9 years old enjoying them, which is ironic because most of the recent Mario games might still be geared to a 'family friendly' audience, but they're good enough that I can still see adults enjoying them as well as kids. Which is a big reversal from what Sonic was intended to be when he was invented - basically a "cooler, hipper" mascot than Mario who was supposed to appeal to slightly older gamers. Now he's basically just a mascot for pre-pubescent kids and low-functioning autistic manchildren.

Sega should just retire him; maybe sell his copyright to the "Sonic" restaurant chain or something instead of pumping out more crappy games.

 

Sonic X was decent, a good show to watch if you just wanted to kill time and there was literally nothing else worthwhile to watch. I think the show you were watching was probably "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog", which was the same show that held the "Watch & Win" sweepstakes that Chris won back in the early 90's.

As spergy as this may sound, this thread makes me want to write some Sonic troll fanfiction with an absurd premise like Sonic and his pals being drafted to fight in Vietnam or something dumb like that. Just to see what people's reactions would be.

 

Anybody know the reason why Sonic's fandom in particular stands out as so god-awful? It's not just mere autism, there's just something off about Sonic's fanbase in particular that I can't quite put my finger on.

I have to admit that it's kind of cool that the Sonic Boom team are at least somewhat aware of Chris and the generally horrid fanbase.

The fact that Sega struggles with making a decent release out of their flagship series might have something to do with it. Every fandom ever has its weirdos, but they have a lot of relatively normal people to even it out. But because of Sega's refusal to spend time or money to develop quality games, the sonic fandom (or at least the active part of it) is evaporating. What we are left with is an every purer distillate of crazy.

 

I have some theories on why certain franchises get such awful fanbases. I'll explain it by using the three worst fandoms I can think of, those being MLP, Sonic and Total Drama.

Spoiler: Spergin'

All three of these feature very distinctive looking characters with super bright colored designs. Sometimes, people with Autism have difficulty discerning people's facial features IRL making live-action TV a chore to watch because they continually have to remind themselves who everyone is. Brightly colored cartoon series completely do away with that problem.

A lot of people in these fandoms also like to put themselves into the franchises via self-insert OCs. (See Chris and Sonichu.) And when it comes to these franchises, there is very little effort involved with that. OCs are incredibly easy to make for them, as most of the characters usually have the same basic body type (All MLP horses are shaped pretty much the same, if you took away their quills and painted Sonic characters the same color, they'd look the same, and female Total Drama characters all have the super-exaggerated hourglass shape. The real major differences in their design come from hair (Total Drama), mane (MLP), or species (Sanic) and in the case of the latter two, which bright color they are. To design an OC, all one would need to do is find a base, color it in, and scribble on hair/mane/quills. Instant self-insert.

The ease doesn't stop there, either. There isn't much work to put in when giving the self-insert a personality either, as each of these series characters follow a basic template. For Sonic, you pick what species you want your character to be, how fast they run, and whatever other power-ups they've got. For MLP you pick if the OC has wings or a horn, and what their cutie-mark/talent is. For Total Drama you choose what 'label' your character falls under (goth, shy, etc.) And then you're done, now you can get yourself all the hedgehog china your little heart desires.

The fact that OCs are easy to make brings us to one of the things that make the fandoms so toxic; a lot of the folks who make them can't handle criticism and fly off the handle when they get it. A lot of drama can be brought about on dA just by saying someone's Green-Amy-Rose is a Sue, and sometimes this drama can infect a chunk of the fandom all on its own.

Since fetishists usually want the easiest route to their wank-fodder, the simple art styles are a good way to get to it. Sonic characters are pretty easy to draw even without a base, so your Amy-Rose-farting-on-Cream's-face masterpiece is only a few minutes away. Why waste your time drawing a more ~realistic~ woman shitting on your chest when Twilightsparkle is so much easier? The quick to make self-inserts come into play here as well, you'll never be short on people who are ready to RP colon three with you.

And then there's the fact that each episode or game usually follows a very strict, safe formula. Total Drama follows the set-up of a reality show, all the ponies learn how to be good friends, and Sanic runs fast and beats up the bad guys. You always know what's coming so you can rest assured nothing will surprise you and make you want to ree. (Sanic's arms notwithstanding.) A lot of people with Autism like following routines, so logically they'd go for media that does the same.

Building on that, as I said before, each character has a simple, basic and easy to understand personality, many of them able to be boiled down to simple labels. Pinkie Pony= Hyper and loud. Sonic= Cool dude with attitude. Total Drama's Lindsay= Dumb blonde. Coupling this with the simple plot-line and everything is very straight forward and easy to follow You always know what to expect from everybody. (This also would make it easier for these characters to be added to your spank-bank.)

 

Yeah, it's probably because the games are so bad that you'd have to be a little mentally unbalanced to be a hardcore fan of them.

 

Huh, you guys forgot to add in the __________ the Hedgehog game. Basically think up a name, any name, and it'll exist due to autism.
