Last night, I beat Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. I personally greatly enjoyed the GameCube remake of MGS1, even though the MGS2 elements made it alot easier.

Couple of days ago I beat the Witness... at least the main part, tried to do the "record challenge" but realizing I don't have the patience for the game anymore, I decided to invest my time elsewhere.

Overall, I'm very much mixed with the game, much as I am with a lot of other smaller indie titles, in which it makes something very simple and tries its hardest to make things seem much more profound than they are. Lots of great "ah HAA!!" moments when you finally figure something out, but usually you're also wading through a lot of "pretty sure you're just jerking me around" moments.

So, I guess I'm glad I played it... and at the same time, glad I don't have to play it anymore.

Double post separated by 18-ish hours...

Last night I finally beat Mirrors Edge. I bought the game back in like 2012 but only got to start playing it like a few months ago... and immediately hating it. Put it aside, then only came back to it last night out of boredom. Huuuuuuuhhh... I know I'm looking at this from a time and place which has given us much better "Parkay" games, but fuck this game was a chore to get through. It was a pleasure to finally delete it off of my harddrive.

Ultima does make it easy, but the PC overkill drags it back down. Christ, how many people end up in your party again?

It's not so much patience, as it is I can be a stubborn bastard when it comes to games. It takes a real piece of work for me to give up on something after I put a certain amount of hours in. Plus, I was honestly really hoping to find that "thing" which made people demand a new Mirror's Edge for the better part of a decade.

....and on that note, in the pursuit of cutting a swath through my backlog, I played and beat Mirror's Edge Catalyst last night. I paid less than $20 for this game.... annnd that's about as fair of a price I would be willing to pay for it in hindsight.

First of all, the parkour system is improved as it doesn't feel like half the time the jump and "grab the fucking ledge you idiot" button isn't working. Still, a lot of it comes down to very precise timing, but for the most part it is doable... most of the time. Anycase, when everything is connecting and things are working, it actually feels really really good... until you hit that one point where you mistime a jump, Faith decides to roll off the ledge and cartwheel into Oblivion, cut to 15-20 second load screen, load in now your momentum is gone, as you listen to the same bit of dialogue over and over and over again until you progress to the next point.

Main storyline is bog-standard action fare and you will probably end up hating most of the characters by the end. Faith is incorrigible fuckup where, if you think about, everything that goes to shit in this game is entirely her fault. Then you got Icarus, the Falco Lombardi to Faith's Fox McCloud, who serves to just be a plot device. The only other character worth mentioning is Plastic, which is essentially your standard quirky nerd girl, who also gains Tumblr Points for not only being black, but probably being a high-functioning autistic.

The city itself makes no goddamn sense. Most buildings and interior places you visit have no actual way in and out except windows or maybe a skylight. And I don't mean that as just where Faith can enter, I mean the designers forgot to add in actual doors or whatever so apparently the entire population of The City of Glass are crazy parkour maniacs (which I suppose makes sense because the entire game is barely populated with NPCs).

The sidequests/ side activities are a mixed bag. the ones where you have to go in and deactivate giant servers are entertaining as are the ones where you're actually fighting guards to deactivate satellite towers. However, any errand quests are a fucking aggravation, and in the end I think I accomplished two before I just said fuck it.

Overall.... ehhh... just slightly above average, but ultimately an entirely unrewarding, hollow experience.

Six high-rise faceplants out of ten.

This is more a little of yesterday but I managed to get the worst ending of Way of the Samurai 4. Thankfully, I said fuck that and tried to go for the ending in where I leave for Britain but the character for that got killed. Now I decided to restart with that same character, stats and all. Try for that route again and after that, go for the best ending which really requires me to do specific things in the beginning of the game.

I just beat Metroid Fusion. Overall a great game, if a bit linear for Metroid.

    I beat Super Mario RPG today. I don't think I've done a one-day start-to-finish on that game since I was 11.

Just beat Wolfenstein: The New Order again last night - third time for me. Really hoping they announce a sequel at E3 2017.

Also, it's interesting on a mechanics perspective how this plays kind of like a hybrid between Doom (run and gun) and Prey (similar UI and "feel" to the stealth mechanics, although Wolfenstein is a bit more forgiving) .
