The Moomins is a Swedish based show inspired by the illustrative story by the delightful Swedish speaking Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jannson. Moomins are splendid, round, white fairy-tale critters that rather resemble hippos. The series features their wondrous and carefree adventures throughout the seasons and the vast lands of Moomin Valley and beyond.

There's a TV series adaptation, which is all on the YouTube for your viewing pleasure! I grew up with this series and highly recommend it.

Its the best show ever and it starts out cute but stuff gets real fast. It's an emotional roller coaster.
Also I found a Moomin plush at some random anime convention and basically lost my mind and bought it instantly. I dont think most people even knew what it was.

I thoroughly enjoy the Moomins' delightful cloud cars. I wish I could zoom so carefree like that.

I used to love that show when I was younger! The Moomins are super adorable.

Are the books the show's based on worth reading? I never read them as a kid so might try and find them as an adult.

The Finnish Embassy mails all your visa paperwork in a Moomin envelope. That was when I was first exposed to them. Then I showed up at Helsinki...

They had just released a movie. Muumin in the Riviera, I think.

Indeed they are. I have three of them and they're the kind of books I would have liked as a kid - but, well, they're obscure as hell in America so I had to discover them as an adult.

Jansson also did a comic strip that's also very good - it's sort of Pogo-esque in its social satire.

You're lucky to get exposure that way. We Americans had hardly any of it, the cartoon certainly didn't air on Nick Jr.

I once found a copy of one of the Moomin books at a Goodwill in the late 90's or early 2000's and didn't think to buy it.

Here's an excellent doc. on Tove Jannson.

How it was for most of us.

That strip came about due to a sudden interest in the property over in the UK I've heard, as it was published first in a paper there. Tove initially did it and then her broher Lars took over the strip. I sorta look at the strip as Finland's version of Peanuts.

On a similar thought, aside from the popular animated series mentioned before, there was also the one made back during the late 60's/early 70's as well. It was originally done at TMS but then production shifted over to Mushi Productions after Tove Jansson saw what they did to her creation (since they had no idea what Moomins were).

    He knows his stuff!

Speaking of Moomin, an Indiegogo campaign is at hand for a new TV series being planned, I figured I might as well link it here before it's too late!

This is the show that has the creature where, literally, everything it touches dies, yeah? As in, the path it walks turns into dead grass/soil?

I've only been exposed to this from the internet, and haven't checked it out yet. It's nice to see a character that cute that didn't come out of Japan.

You spend too much time on Kiwifarms.
