Oh, Lufia 2, how I love you let me count the ways. There have been many greater and more memorable RPGs over the years, but truly Lufia 2 holds a special place in my heart due to it being the most creative and unique game of its genre at the time. Even now there are so many fun elements packed into this little cartridge. I could sperg for hours but my favorite things were:

    Puzzles!
Most RPGs are just boring trudges through random encounter hells. In this game nearly every single room in a dungeon had some crazy block and switch puzzle you had to navigate. Not only that, but you got little tools ala Zelda or Wild Arms in order to solve them. Neat!

    Mons!
This was probably the first game I played that basically had Pokemon. You had to go out of your way to find these little monsters that you could raise/feed and they basically functioned as little AI controlled helpers during battles. Also? They had like 6 evolutions each! Whoa!

    An entire bonus roguelike!
Fuck this was the best - I have save files just at this point in the game so I can play the dungeon. Basically it's the usual 100 floor dungeon but you are thrown back to level one and everything you find in the dungeon is randomly generated. Some super rare items you find you can even take back out into the main game! Nice!

    This music!

As soon as I read the thread title, I have the sudden urge to go play Donkey Kong Country.

Did anyone play Pandemonium for the PS1? That is the only game I have any kind of nostalgia for.

I got this bundled with my Gamecube for Christmas of 2002. The platforming levels made me rage so hard as a kid but I still loved it.

In terms of childhood, this stands out to me. Not because of fun per se but rather the fact that I did beat it with one pokemon that was the only high leveled one I had (Feraligatr) and using two weak pokemon as proxies (so I could revive Feraligatr when he went down). Also can't forget multiple defeats against the Elite Four. I'm pretty sure that caused my Feraligatr to wish death upon a child me.

Outside of the obvious Pokémon versions and Nintendo 64 games (although Pokémon Puzzle League is still the shit to this day), it's probably Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

Yeah, it was my dad's game and he played through it more, but I liked watching him play, and I'd take it for a spin multiple times myself. I didn't really catch on the controls were terrible since I was just a young kid and I didn't care about that, but I remember the frustrations due to that, especially in landing jumps and aiming. It's also infamous for the boss levels being brutal, mostly Boba Fett and the Gladiator.

Although I never could push myself through the Sewers of Imperial City level because the dianogas freaked me out, but mainly because they roar. That roar haunts me to this day.

Real challengers like me use Meganium. Even though its evolution line is cute it has a huge disadvantage against most of the Johto gym leaders.

Pilotwings 64. Not my only favorite, but it's still pretty good. Pilotwings Resort sucks in comparison.

My favorite one from my childhood (rather later childhood since I was like 9 when I got it) has to be Rayman 2: The Great Escape. I remember the shopkeeper's kid made a copy of it for while my first computer was being built and I got hooked since then.
And overall I find it's a game that has aged pretty well, mostly by not relying too much on things that would have been technical limitations by then (overly detailed models, complicated gameplay) but instead on things that were available (the texture work is gorgeous, good character design, amazing soundtrack and story) all while having a pretty unique industrial, acid fairitale vibe that even later games of the franchise have't been able to capture (although Rayman 3 was pretty good too and the more recent 2D platformers have been decent for what they are, or so I've heard).

clayfighers. we owned the regular copy (and played the shit out of it) but sculptor's cut (very rare, rental only deal) was where it was at!

the programming turned out to suck though.

    but kids don't care.

    I like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, arcade and anything PS2, 3, or 4.

Interestingly enough, Mayasa Nakamura the creator of Pac-Man, died 2 days ago.

The only Rayman game I ever played was the first one on PS1. I drove myself crazy trying to find all the cages and this was before I had the internet. I kinda miss that kind of exploration.
