Just a thread where you can talk about things from video games that have been overused in various list videos on youtube. I'll get the thread going by mentioning some of the entries on youtube lists that I always hate seeing.

Psycho Mantis and The End - I swear, if I watch one more list mentioning how Psycho Mantis reads your memory card or The End can be skipped by setting the date on your console to a week later, I'm going to groan so hard. The worst part of these entries is how the people making these lists often refuse to acknowledge that you've probably heard of both of these guys many times before on other lists, and act as though these are two obscure video game bosses who many people have never heard of.

Aeris Death - One of the funniest early internet jokes came in the form of a porn website called AerisDies. The idea is that whenever someone looked for porn online, they would eventually encounter a massive spoiler for Final Fantasy 7. Of course, nowadays every youtube list featuring 'emotional' moments in video games contains that spoiler for the game, and it's not a funny joke in the slightest.

Bioshock Twist - Admittedly this one isn't as bad as others because at least a number of youtubers acknowledge that most people are probably aware of this twist, but it's still something that's very overused in these lists.

Sonic 06 - This game is absolutely legendary for being one of the worst games of all time. Really, it's one of those rare games which has no redeeming factors. The gameplay is terrible, the game is extremely glitchy, the story is arguably the most cringeworthy story in all of video games, and despite it's fairly short length it is also embarrassingly padded. All of this has resulted in a massive hatedom for the game which means that inevitably any youtuber who caters to gamers will mention it. This gets ridiculous at times, such as the infamous 12-part video series (where each video was more than 40 minutes long) talking about the game in great detail.

Other overused things in games lists:

    Big Rigs
    Ride To Hell: Retribution
    Mortal Kombat
    Resident Evil (Jill Sandwich)

    The "Microsoft killed Rare!" cliche.
We get it, they're not as good as they were in N64 days, but repeating this same drivel over and over again is not going to change a damn thing.
At this point, it's just time to give it a rest. They're glory days are behind them, so just move on with your life.

Actually, on the subject of Rare, Goldeneye and Oddjob are both very overused in those lists. Which is kind of unfortunate because although the gameplay of Goldeneye holds up, the graphics are incredibly ugly. Also, people mentioning how OP Oddjob is in every list gets a bit dull.

Well, there's that game and Eternal Darkness. The internet loves horror and meta-stuff. Put them together in an obscure cult-classic, and you get a game that every Youtuber wants to use in a list.

Oooooh, a game that turns down the volume on your television, how spooky and meta.

"Fire Emblem is the best game on the 3DS!!"
The thing that really bugs me about this one is how Awakening and Fates are not really good games at all.
Literally the only reason people pay attention to these games in the first place is simply because "OMFG MAI WAIFU!"
Seriously, I've never once seen a conversation about Awakening/Fates that doesn't devolve into jerking off to shit-tier waifus.

    Short answer: “THE WEAPONS BREAK!”

Long answer: What’s been kinda a joke in the Zelda community are the super serial hardcore Ocarina of Time fans that can’t acknowledge that somebody somewhere might think Ocarina of Time isn’t the undisputed best in any given category.
Any top Zelda list that doesn’t have Ocarina of Time as number one will get rabid comments. Same for any list of best N64 games.
Thanks to Breath of the Wild being as good as it is, everyone has to nitpick it to justify saying Ocarina of Time was better, and every list about the why Breath was terrible says the same thing. The weapons break.
Now, I’ve completed BotW if you don’t count Korok seeds and I’ll say this, at a certain point pretty early in the game if you run out of weapons, you’re bad.

If you really wanna piss Ocarina fans just show them Pibot’s list of best attributes of 3D Zelda’s below.

Best 3D Zelda game overall: Breath of the Wild.
Best 3D Zelda music overall: Wind Waker
Best 3D Zelda song: Molgera’s theme from Wind Waker
Best 3D Zelda boss to fight: Koloktos from Skyward sword.
Best boss in personality: Zant from Twilight Princess
Best 3dZ temple (tie): Shadow Temple from Ocarina and Stone Tower from Majora
Best version of Princess Zelda (tie): Wind Waker and Skyward Sword
Best version of Ganondorf/Ganon: Twilight Princess
    The lists go on.

The best quote I've seen about Awakening was from a Youtube channel that talks about Fire Emblem games a lot.

"Awakening is a good game, but it's not a good Fire Emblem game."

As for it's status as the best or one of the best 3DS games well, let's take a look at Metacritic.

    http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/3ds/filtered

The system didn't really have a great line-up of games released for it. Check out all the ports, re-released 3D editions of old 90s games, and those kind of obscure RPGs. Also, a 'meh' Mario game and about 4 Pokemon games in the top 20. For a system that's dominated the handheld console market for years, there really haven't been that many great games made for the system.

Anyways, for Pibot (so I don't double post), I think that the issue people have with BOTW is that as soon as the game was released fans started labelling it as "THE BEST ZELDA GAME EVAAAR! IT'S ZELDA, BUT OPEN-WORLD!! (Suspiciously like Dark Souls, but whatevs)." Heck, I remember I stopped going to Dorkly's website because they went on a campaign for a while promoting the game for about a month straight where literally every comic/video/article was about how great BOTW was. The pinnacle of which was a comic comparing BOTW to OOT, which basically just said that BOTW is superior to OOT in every way on a technical level. The nadir is when they ran out of ways to say that BOTW is a great game and started making a bunch of comics about how wind surfing is fun before moving on to obsess over something else.

What basically happened is that fans of the game started defending the game's status in their minds as "THE BEST ZELDA GAME EVAAR BAR NONE!!" by making posts all throughout the internet. The people who didn't believe that it was really as good as people say (Jim Sterling, for instance), would bring up common complaints, the most glaring being the fact that the weapons break.

I mean, weapons breaking isn't exactly a new thing (in fact, when BOTW was being developed it was a trendy thing to have in open-world games). However, in BOTW the weapons break far too quickly. Even the best weapons in the game break quickly, and for a lot of people the fact that the main gameplay mechanic is constantly pausing the game in the middle of combat to select another weapon is simply an annoyance they can't look past that isn't in any other Zelda game.

Honestly, the weapons breaking in BOTW is something that gets overused by both sides. Fans of the game calling it the best Zelda game (or minimum top 3) will mention how the criticism of the weapons system is a bullshit argument made by whiny people online. Whereas, the people labelling it as a good game hindered by a lack of focus and seriously iffy design choices will inevitably bring up the most iffy design choice in the game, the weapons breaking.

Oh lord, remember when Steam developers started labelling glitches as being "purposefully left in to make it more challenging," and not balancing their games because they wanted to add more difficulty. They basically flooded Steam with unbalanced, poorly designed glitchy messes, then made the excuse that they were trying to make "The Dark Souls of (insert genre here)."

Ironically, From Software themselves used to make that excuse for some of their pre-Dark Souls games (most notably, Steel Battalion) by claiming that the games were poorly designed to give hardcore gamers a challenge. Remember Steel Battalion for the Kinect? "The Kinect has finally found it's hardcore game!"

To quote Yahtzee, "Can a game expected, and sometimes demanded, by the target audience to be difficult ever be accused of having bad design?"

Well, I think the answer to that question depends on the situation. However, the original Ninja Gaiden being released with a number of glitches and terrible design choices being left in the game simply because the developer wanted to make the game more challenging can most definitely be accused of having bad design. Dark Souls, with it's tendency to make itself difficult though bad design decisions (you get the impression that the game was meant to be easier, and that you are supposed to rely on the community to tell you where to find important items and which pathways to take, and that the game actually gained it's reputation because of how hostile the community became towards more casual players playing the game. I had someone tell me that since I found the game easy because I looked up a walkthrough when I got stuck that I wasn't playing it right, and that the only way to play it right was to struggle through), can also be accused of being badly designed.

People need to understand that although some gamers appreciate a true challenge in their games, the reason why certain hardcore games become popular is in spite of their bad design choices, not because of them. Unfortunately, when Dark Souls became popular people started including poor design choices in their games because they believed that people loved Dark Souls because of it's poor design choices, not in spite of them.

The same thing happened with survival horror games when Amnesia and Slender became popular, and sandbox games when Goat Simulator became popular.

Do elaborate on the Amnesia point. Being fan of that game, I'd love to know what you mean.

Amnesia became popular on Steam and on Youtube, which resulted in a bunch of low quality horror games being released which took inspiration and elements from it. Most of these games were asset-flips or low effort horror games that made you avoid monsters rather than engage them because that was the easiest way to create a horror game. Essentially, Steam was filled with horror-themed walking simulators where your motivation was to continue walking to either advance the story (Amnesia) or collect certain objects (Slender).

I just want to clarify here that Amnesia is a good game, and Slender has it's charm. However, the shitty horror games that flooded Steam afterwards (and were popularized by Pewdiepie) were all terrible. The nadir might have been that Kickstarter game taking place in a maze in a graveyard (or whatever) where the ghost doesn't even chase you, the game just expects you to freak out and run away when you see it even though it literally never does anything.

Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts, I'm tired of seeing that entry time and time again. Sinistar was popular in those lists for a while, but I think it's less popular now.

The anti-piracy screen from Sonic CD usually turns up whenever there's a video about the game.

    -No Russian
    -Manhunt
    -Postal 2

The worst movies based on video games - The top 5 is all Uwe Boll movies.

You might actually find this funny, but when I was a kid I watched Postal and I thought it was a decent movie. I would occasionally watch it when I saw it on tv up until my late teens when I outgrew that kind of humour (for the most part). I was actually surprised when I started hearing about a terrible filmmaker named Uwe Boll, and I discovered that this legendarily bad filmmaker had created the movie that I had enjoyed, and that many people were labelling the movie as one of the worst ever made.

That being said, I enjoy watching bad movies. I mean, I grew up watching crap like Boa Vs. Python and a movie about Nazis on the moon. My dad was into campy movies and I guessed I got into them as well. Postal is definitely, at least to me, Uwe Boll's most intentionally camp movie, and I still think that it's his most enjoyable film.

Conkers bad fur day.... actually scratch that ALL games that are "edgy". Im so sick of hearing about these games that "pushed the limits" because they make a sex joke here or there. How is it pushing the limits? I find it funny how neck beards are under the belief that swears and sex jokes are just words that dont mean anything but do a complete 180 when it gets put in video games. They are so easily amused
