The first Jaws is one of the great horror movies of all time. Then they decided to make more of them, with sharply diminishing returns. So here is a thread for both praise of genius and mockery of poorly-executed cash grabs.

Let us begin with the famous quote from Michael Caine about Jaws: the Revenge-
“I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”

It's really incredible how quickly the franchise descended into schlock, but like when you read stuff like how Bruce was originally going to be the "star" of the film with loads of screen time it shows that the success was largely accidental.

If the shark was going to get a ton of screen time, they should have taken advantage of Dreyfus being around and made it What About Bob? with a shark instead of Bill Murray.

The shark’s name was “Bruce.” Show some respect, please.

This might be an urban myth, but I remember hearing somewhere that Michael Caine accepted the role in Jaws: The Revenge after reading literally just the first line of the script -
    'Fade in, Hawaii'

    P much a paid vacation.

Bruce is only a respectable name if you've got a chainsaw hand.

Though I do agree, full-heartedly even, you can’t really know that for sure with camera angles and such. You don’t know he doesn’t have a chainsaw fin.

The first Jaws is one of those few movies whose importance can't be overstated. It's credited with creating the summer movie season and, of course, was Steven Spielberg's first big hit. Had Jaws not worked, we'd probably be living in a very different pop culture landscape.

To me Jaws is a film that you need to see before you watch any other shark film or mild horror movie for that matter, otherwise you will just be watching a rather tame 70's "horror" film.

I have always felt very fortunate that the very first horror film I ever saw was Alien, and it set me up for a lifetime of scares.

Jaws is a rare case of breaking both hipster talk and reality where the movie is BETTER than the book. It's an incredible film. Even as a child as a huge shark nerd, I was bothered the anti shark propaganda, and not even in the over blown tier now a days things take, literally people spiked up shark hunting because that movie.

The first film and any Jaws geek should probably stop at 2 (heck 1 imho) was based off the Jersey Man eater. Whom was probably different sharks and more so a Bull not a Great White as Jaws/Bruce was.

As an avid diver, I've only been scared once by sharks, it was a bull.

As others mentioned Jaws set the tone for so much culture, in both horror and re lighting a fear in nature. For film and even more so horror fans Jaws is incredibly important as a film. The second was a decent attempt to make more of what everyone loved. It really reminds us sequels will happen even if they don't work. The rest were darned cash grabs at best.

I think to step back outside of the series it self but market issue it's really one of the first times films were drug out and sold on the name, we all know and agree Jaws 3+ were crap and cartoony. But the studios crapped them out knowing the title jaws would sell and those films did make money so they made them. Until a bit later we didn't really have piles of a franchise save some serials, then again horror boomed making elevenity billion Halloween, Nightmares etc.
