Pretty much just games that you didnt really like or outright hated when you started them but after some time you started loving them.

For me it was Dark Souls it actually took me a playtrough of Bloodborne to fully appreciate it.

Tried Mass Effect 3 years ago, didn't like it very much. Origin offered Mass Effect 2 for free recently, I tried that out, did a full playthrough and came back to 3, and I'm enjoying it much more now.

I used to have zero interest in the Pokemon franchise until I played Pokemon Sun. That game is a blast and I'll say it's one of the best games on the 3DS IMO.

Gothic 2 was a game I disliked due to the fact I couldn't play it without Night of the Raven being installed. After finding an easy to use editor for it and also making more use of sidestepping, I slowly grown to like it.

    Pilotwings 64.

When I first played it in my tween years, I absolutely loathed the game. It was far too sensitive, I thought. Everything was broken. It didn't tell me what to do. But... somewhere in my outright stubborness, I was determined to not let this game beat me. And I kept playing it, and I had it all down to muscle memory. Eventually I got gold on every course and... I honestly learned to love that now ugly-as-hell polygonal nightmare.

    ....

brb, gonna listen to the soundtrack.

While everyone may have enjoyed the Sonic Adventure games at first and now may hate them, I actually thought they sucked from the beginning, and now I can't help but love them.

They've seen some age, but I still think they're great

silent hill. the controls are just godawful. dear god are the controls bad. hitler and stalin and mao and satan made the controls.

supposedly it's 'oh you're not playing as mario or link or master chief, you're being a normal guy with no combat skill!' right, because normal people walk backwards into walls and attack fire hydrants when being attacked by goddamn zombie pterodactyls and zombie dogs.

really it's because a game that looks like a movie and a game that's controllable are mutually exclusive. if silent hill had a different way of handling the camera, this would be different. but no, it has to be a 'playable' movie.

    that said.

as trite and predictable as the story is... it kept calling me and i kept wanting to see what happened next, even though i knew what it was. funny how that is.

likewise, some of the really dumb looking ghosts from oblivion are blocky and dumb looking, but somehow really spooky. sometimes even things that are stale and unoriginal can be really effective.

Thats just normal tank controls and thats how it used to be for many survival horror games on the ps1, I for one never had a problem with tank controls but i can see how it would be offputting to most people playing them nowadays.

Oblivion was a game I didn't like at first due to how different it was to Morrowind in terms of the setting. Once I actually bothered to explore places outside of the main quest and tried out a few cosmetic texture mods, the game slowly began to grow on me. Granted, the enemy scaling is crap but the very least, adjusting difficulty makes it somewhat less damage spongy.

Overwatch. Played the beta and didn't really see the appeal, but after spending some time with it and learning more about how the game is played I found myself having a good time. It's not even my favorite shooter on the market right now but I find myself firing up OW instead of those games for a quick round or two because those games get stale much quicker.

Now if only they weren't nerfing my crutch Roadhog I'd be a happy guy.

Master Of Orion 2. I didn't really hate it, but I had no idea what I was doing at first.

Super Paper Mario. The main gameplay gimmick was dumb and at first I was mostly just feeling loss of all the neat stuff I liked so much in Thousand Year Door. Each world had more annoying side characters and quests than the last (the backtracking and mandatory note-taking in the first Cragnon stage is the worst piece of gameplay in the whole game, IMO). Then I got to Sammer Kingdom and suddenly the game started feeling fun and the story got interesting...I mean I hated Luvbi but she was the last hurrah of the annoying chapter-specific sidekicks and she wasn't as bad as the last-minute infodump of the Floro Sapiens' motivations for killing and enslaving the Cragnons that somehow makes them supposedly less evil.

Funnily enough, a lot of the first 3 Silent Hill games is pretty much the developers realizing that they made a flawed game with terrible combat and game mechanics, then using the flaws to their advantage by creating a spooky atmosphere. Famously, the fog is basically making up for terrible draw distance. The combat sucks, so there's not too many things to fight, which helps with the atmosphere. In Silent Hill 2 at least they hired only a single guy to do the cutscenes, which resulted in a pretty tight story.

So yeah, flawed games, but awesome in spite (or because) of the flaws

Mario RPG. I got it for christmas when I was a younger and was expecting a normal Mario game. I had never played (or even heard of) a turn based rpg before, and was all: "What the hell is this standing here waiting then selecting attack." I played it for maybe ten minutes and hated it. The day before my mom was going to exchange it I decided to give it a second (longer )chance, and loved it. I've liked RPG's ever since.
