Somehow this reminds me when Cinar/HBO did that Little Lulu series in the late 90's and it kept to that look like it could be a town from the 40's or 50's yet throw in a few modern things that wouldn't ahve existed then. Yeah, that could work with The Simpsons had they stuck to keeping that older TV and rabbit ears to this day!

That is something to think about.

Glad I stopped watching by that point then.

By this point, it would be.

Apparently enough people loved it so goddamn much.

    (didn't read tthread)

i recently watched some stuff of the first 3 seasons. i hold a belief that fresh things always stay that way (i mean like mario games and tv shows and stuff), so i say early simpsons holds up (because i say that about all media that's fresh).

the klasky cupo animation is deliberately ugly yet constructed to give a unique look and aesthetic feel. i really miss it actually. compared to rugrats and thornberries, the klasky cupo animation on the simpsons is really not ugly. but every bit as constructed.

i think switching to cgi and a different studio took that visual warmth out.

    That's what it did.

The look/aesthetic The Simpsons had in those earlier seasons felt like they were inspired by what was seen in certain animated shorts during the 80's. Ones that stick out in my mind include several from the National Film Board of Canada like Richard Condie's The Big Snit and perhaps Cordell Barker's The Cat Came Back. The latter film in particular has a very distinctive look that reminded me of first season Simpson episodes when they were still experimenting with the backgrounds and often gave walls and skies this gradient shift in hues to create a sense of depth in an otherwise flat color.

I am a huge Simpsons fan, but I must admit that I liked the Mike Scully era almost as much as the "Classic" era. If Seasons 1-8 were a golden age, then in my opinion Seasons 9-13 were a silver age. Good, but not as good as what came before. Especially when compared to the blandness of the Al Jean seasons.

I don't think Simpsons ever truly jumped the shark per se, but it did run out of steam. Anything that has been on the air for almost thirty years is bound to do so. Speaking of which, when do you think they're gonna pull the plug on The Simpsons? I heard that Season 30 could be the last one, but that's just a rumor.

I remember thinking the show was starting to suck around 1997. I didn't even think the Frank Grimes episode was that funny.

Maybe it's because I'm younger (I was born in 1993), but I think that 1995-2002 were among the show's best years. It really wasn't until around 2006 did I start to find the show was running out of steam. After the movie came out, the show became nearly unwatchable (oddly enough, I liked the movie). Just my two cents, though.

    ToroidalBoat ¿qué?

Maybe people who were born around 2000 and haven't really watched the old episodes think The Simpsons today is an alright show. Something about ignorance and bliss.

I saw the older episodes too, because the local Fox affiliate would constantly re-air reruns from all seasons of The Simpsons in the evenings, so I got to see lots of good classic Simpsons as well, but the later episodes are just stale and unwatchable. I wish Al Jean would finally step down as showrunner, but that seems unlikely.

That's a homage (or, send up ripoff, depending on who keeps score) to Treasure of the Sierra Madre that's flying over your head there, just so you know.

Once you eat the Guatemalan insanity pepper, the merciless pepper of Quetzalacatenango, there really is no return for anyone after that. Why would this show be any different?

Remember the shit they pull to make Smithers "officially" come out as gay? Like I said "what the fuck", because I thought it was clearly established that everybody in Springfield knew by this point he was. Just another excuse for the show to pull in the liberal demographics.

John Titor I am "Punished" Scientist, it's so nuclear

Season 8 was when the show got weird; 12 was when the show got really weird. At least they had funny episodes.

I think the movie used up all of their humor points.

I like how it portrays the Moon as a place with "fertile soil" that "belongs to America."

Yeah, I don't get why it was necessary to have him 'come out'. Pretty much every character already knew and it wasn't like Smithers was constantly trying to deny it.

Democratic hopeful Adalai Stevenson thought so. ;)

Just the way they did that made me think of all those stupid films I had to watch in school too, now I know how the teachers felt!

Sometimes people can't move on without feeling like we have to be reminded before we go.

Man I wish this show was on Netflix. I've been watching clips of it on youtube and just about anything involving Moe or Mr. Burns or Flanders is making me laugh.

I've been over exposed to Family Guy and American Dad, and have never found Seth McFarlane funny...

I don't want to be one of those 'SJWs are taking over TV!!!' people... but watching the simpsons right now is like attending a Madonna concert in 2017- No one is having a good time and it's a bit sad.
