Not having seen much life in this thread, I thought I update it with this recent video a critic did that discussed what made the show different after the late 1990's. I thought it was rather interesting to share here.

    I saw that one too.

To me, the show was "gold" quality around season 4. "The Principal and the Pauper" season marked the change in quality from "gold" to "silver." After season 10 (the last one with Hartman), it went from "silver" to "bronze." After Season 11 when Maude was killed off and that "Behind The Laughter" episode, the quality went from "bronze" to "crap."

"Behind The Laughter" would've been a fitting final episode.

Agreed. You know your show has gone on too long when Rick and Morty showing up for the intro (not even an actual episode, just the intro) is the best thing that's happened in years.

    Who's teaching Bart's class now?

I've noticed from what little I've watched of the newer episodes that jokes seem so forced. It's like they're practically explaining why a joke is supposed to be funny.

No wonder CWC likely still likes the show.

Also it may sound old fashioned, but I like the show better when it's traditional animation. Like others observed, the old animation is fluid (and sometimes hilarious), while the CG animation can be very stiff and robotic.

In the DVD commentary, they said they had to go CG because ink and paint animation is a dying art that fewer and fewer know. And of course CG is cheaper.

Personally, I find that Seasons 1-8 are the "Golden Age" and Seasons 9-12 are the "Silver Age", as I am a little more forgiving of Mike Scully than other Simpsons fans. Seasons 13-17 were watchable though not great, but everything after The Movie has been stale garbage.

For all the crap that Scully gets for ruining The Simpsons, Al Jean is much worse in that regard.

I can very easily watch episodes of The Simpsons from Seasons 1-12 and laugh my head off time and time again.

These last 4-5 seasons? Anytime I happen to catch them, I find myself just changing the channel after a few minutes.

Certainly, Season Four sounds about right to me. Still annoyed they killed off Ned's wife like it didn't matter at all.

It seems like those intros (or "Couch Gags") are all I care about whenever they get to do one unlike the rest like that. I still like Dan Hertzfeldt's effort.

These are really the only time when it felt more creator-driven and less committee dominated. It's almost like the equivalent to "Lasagna Cat", but only so far as they could go.

Now there's a question for the ages. I don't think they even have Bart go to school at all (much like Homer at his job).

There's always feeble minds to feed.

Why some of us miss what Season One did to lay the groundwork on, though I suppose I wanted something similar to what I was seeing coming out of the NFB at the time.

They could still hand draw the frames on a tablet/cintiq. There are programs for that, though they used to scan drawings in digitally as well, but I guess we moved from that. Nowadays it's a lot of pre-made assets they can just plunk down on a background without having to second-guess things.

I suppose I was in it for the Golden Age since I was still a teen for most of it and then petered out while during the Silver Age.

I'm surprised he's still at it. I guess they still need someone from the 'old guard' to be at it.

Sometimes they get a guest start to be Bart's teacher but that's about it (better excuse than any I suppose), but apparently nothing like classic sitcom standbys like getting someone to be Krabappel's cousin or relative who assumed the role of teacher for 'reasons' (it worked for Dennis the Menace and My Three Sons).

I'm sure you're not alone! Someone at the studio agreed to this and it aired.

I just wish we had our equilvalent to the Lasanga Cat episode with the "pipe strip" and it's a guy for a half-hour going on about all the intricacies, ponderies and revelations of the Simpsons intro sequence!

"For example, the camera moves in on Bart in the classroom, nearly having completed the board with his latest statement. Now this particular piece of chalk he holds in his hand was manufactured by the Classroom Chalk Co. of Davernport, IA...

"The uranium rod that Homer so aggrevatedly throws down a drain vent could be looked on as his disdain for nuclear safety in the midst of political turmoil on the heat of global distruction from an unforseen event...

"Lisa is an existentalist, an enigma, a sign of things to come that aren't already being felt in the music room as she is dismissed from another session of bland conformity..."

    You get the idea!

I thought that i was the only one who liked the old animation because of how fluid it was

Reminds me of the lady who wanted "a single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man's hat."

The "curly straight curly straight" scene in the college episode is a good example of what CG animation is missing.

There is that subtleness I'm sure is quite lacking these days. I would say the show used to had that balance between the wild, ropey movement and the small, subtile approaches to animation that made it work.

I remember taking a nuclear engineering class and the teacher mentioning how the Simpsons was one of the biggest contributes to radiophobia and how the world could be a better place on a purely functional level if it just went away forever.

It sparked a whole debate on the quality of the show over time and we concluded it really was time for the show to end.

If and when the Simpsons are ever cancelled, what will be the reaction?
