It's possible he got it early and never got the privilege taken away. I have autism and I get some disability benefits from Alberta, but that's only because there's a lot of paperwork involved to get those benefits, and there was less when I was younger. The idea is that low-functioning autistics get benefits, and high-functioning don't (or, they get much less). When I was younger, there was no distinction, all autism was labeled as autism and got the same benefits.

Of course, this is assuming that a city in the United States works similarly to a province in Canada.

I read somewhere, possibly here, that it was intended for the parents of autistic kids if they had to bail quickkly if the kid freaked out.

So to Chris, this is merely a VIP pass.

Thought it was more to prevent autistic kids from becoming roadkill if they bolted into the streets, it may make sense for children, but an autistic adult needs to use the regular parking spaces since those who are legit handicapped need the help

Based on his history, Chris is the one likely to create roadkill.
It seems pretty easy to get a handicap tag these days. Apparently behavioral disorders qualify. I'd hate for someone with social anxiety to have to park 20 feet further away.

    Pure speculation:

I am no expert, but I would wager the state authorities who dispense the handicapped parking tags/decals/hangers are probably disposed to hand the things out to anyone with any shred of proof of any kind of disability. The federal laws on that kind of stuff (i.e. anything remotely resembling discrimination against the handicapped) are quite harsh, and I can't imagine any state wants to fight someone like Chris in court.

The cost of the process to regularly vet and verify the condition is enduring and that the permit is still justified is probably not something they can justify either. And you're not likely to ever see that reformed because, politically, who is going to bring that up and be accused of campaigning or legislating against the disabled?

It can't be that big of a problem, everywhere I go save for my office the handicapped spaces are always open (except for one or two sometimes). I would think the only way that would ever get any momentum behind it is if legitimately handicapped people complained en masse and the state government was forced to do something.

I do too actually. In my case I usually park on the ass end of the parking lot, away from everybody.
