That's implying that fandoms are ever good to begin with.

If Chris ruins a fandom for you, were you even a fan?

True. I’m ok with Chris not being a fan of things I like though. It’s kind of strange he doesn’t like most of the things guys our age like, except Transformers but maybe that’s because he wants to transform into a woman? Anyway to me anything TF after 1990 is garbage.

It's always amusing every few months when a brony first discovers Chris and is all indignant about how Chris gives horsefuckers a bad name. They like to pretend that the world doesn't already see them as basement dwelling shut-ins, and that somehow their entertainment preferences being shared by an obscure Internet figure will tarnish their good standing with the public at large. Then again, maybe I'll start sperging out if Chris starts watching MST3K.

Thankfully, the most autistic potential MST3K fans are soaked up by the Nostalgia Critic.

Chris enjoys breathing air, so does that ruin breathing air for you?

Although if enough fans of a subject create a bad reputation of anyone who likes said subject -- so one may assume you live up to that reputation just for liking said subject -- I guess you could count that as "ruining the fandom."

My point is that I just don't understand how moronic fantards can make one not like the thing they liked anymore. You can be a fan of something and not interact with the rest of the community or just interact with a few like-minded fans.

That's one thing that's always seemed odd to me. Why is it the moment you start liking something, "identity politics" considers you to be automatically part of a "community" of people you likely never even met?

I think it has to do with the hivemind attitude in fandoms.
From my experience, most of the sane fans I've met (including fandoms as bad as Star Wars and Sonic) don't even call themselves "fans".
In fact, the word "fan" comes from fanatical, meaning "filled with excessive and single-minded zeal", so it's pretty safe to assume that the word itself has been bastardized in the same way as the word "anime" (literally just Japanese for any animation, even Looney Tunes and The Simpsons) has most certainly been bastardized by weebs.

And "manga" just means "comics." Even ones like Superman or Calvin and Hobbes.

Yet a number of Americans don't like it when non-Japanese comics are called "manga." One even called doing so "theft."

I think Americans -- especially Millennials -- focus way too much over "fandom" this and "community" that. Like @QuiltGuilt said, you can like a media without caring what others who happen to like the same thing are like.

There's a difference between liking something and identifying yourself as part of a group. If you are a fan of Doctor Who for instance, then you probably won't be automatically lumped in with the rest of the fandom. If you start labelling yourself as a Whovian, attend conventions and events in costume, post/talk about Doctor Who and read up on Doctor Who trivia, then you'll be associated with the fandom.

It's like those people who will bring up Halo/COD every time I speak to them, then ask why people associate them with the toxic community of gamers on the multiplayer servers for those games when, according to them, they are nothing like them and are simply normal guys playing a game, buying merchandise for the game, buying DLC and making plans with other people (who are most certainly not a part of the community, they just like to play the game) to play the game for a few hours straight.

What I find is that in fandoms there are different types of fans, just like in a real community. In every fandom there are the 'weird' guys who the rest of the fandom tries to disassociate themselves from, and there are the people who actively start screaming "NO!! I'M NOT LIKE THAT LOSER!! I'M NORMAL!!"

The nineties brought about an alternative culture and a new generation of pundits (South Park, for instance, and MST3K) who spent years telling us that "Hey! Even though millions of dollars went into creating this cartoon/movie/tv show/game, and hundreds of people worked to create this and market it to people, that doesn't mean that you should care about it so much. It's still just a cartoon/movie/tv show/game and you should really just relax and, more importantly, not mention it when we screw up." So, this generation basically grew up hearing "Don't take this too seriously," while simultaneously being told "Oh, and remember to support this show with your money and time, and also come and meet the cast and crew at the convention centre next month." This, of course, has resulted in fans generally going onto two sides of the spectrum, either the "I don't take this too seriously," or "I take this very seriously."

Youtubers took this to a new extreme, but I won't talk about that here (that's what KF is for).

In the end, art will be enjoyed in whatever way the audience wishes to enjoy it once it has been released to the audience. Even though some of those ways that art is enjoyed might be strange, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is wrong.

I hate to sink to this level of autism, but fuck it.
Idea Guy 2: Ideas In Space, if you're reading this, you will probably get doxxed. You will fall. You will fall harder than the Josh Wise did. I feel because of this Bluespike shit you're having Chris do, somebody on the Farm is probably gonna fuck your shit up.

    You've been warned.

This guy is slightly better than the Josh Wise, simply because I've yet to see le edgy memes coming out Chris.
Keep in mind, that's like saying a person on life support looks better than a person that's dead.
