Even from my Australian perspective of having a lot of funding to assist disabled people I suspect that the autism will be too high functioning for a group home and he will be on his own.

 

Nah, he is not too high functioning for a group home, infact, high functioning and low functioning have gotten some criticism lately since they often overestimate or underestimate people's abilities and Chris is definitely no exception. Chris seemed to only get the high functioning label as a kid because he wasn't nonverbal which back then seemed to be the only criteria for "high functioning" even though, with day to day life, he can barely take care of himself, manage his finances, maintain a job, etc. and pretty much function in society

I have met autistic/developmentally disabled people who live in group homes that are way more functioning than Chris in the sense that they can hold a job and can function fairly well in the community with the right supports, even if it is a part time minimum wage bagger/stocker at a grocery store or a janitor in addition to their tugboat and are verbal.

 

Autism can impair the ability to work at even that.

Doing an undesired factory-like task like that can take far more out of such an autist than a neurotypical.

 

Sometimes you just live enough to become a villain.

I know in the past people gave Chris a lot of flack for having a tugboat, but honestly? He is more than qualified for it. I think the biggest problem if that was that he was spending it on useless crap, but still.

 

There's said to be a "cult of work" that evolved from the Puritan days where they seem to have overvalued it.

In such a view, seems one is seen as "worthless scum" if and just because they can't "contribute to society".

That said, the unproductive life of a "NEET" may not be so neat.

 

There is a bit of a cruel bent to society that people who need help are looked down on. Honestly, at this point, I do not think Chris is capable of caring for themself and they need to be in a home. This should have happened decades ago.

 

Yeah, I mean, there are other ways to contribute to society without working and a lot of people on tugboats work part time jobs because their tugboat doesn't cover all of their living expenses or because they want to get out of the house for something to do.

I mean, aside from giving people a lot of laughs and entertainment, I don't know how much Chris has contributed to society.

 

there's no way Chris is getting a job except in a sheltered workshop that caters to people like him and know about his issues going in
there is this social and political view that people should only get money if they work for it, even if they legit have problems working and earning money (workfare, for example)
Chris can't be left to his own devices, because we know what happens when he is, and he legit needs other people to help him get by

 

There can also be autists who are competent enough to more or less take care of themselves and live independently on welfare, yet still can't handle the typical minimum wage job. But yeah, in the case of "Chris Chan", he can't seem to handle independent living, as shown by the "Financhu Crisis", almost daily fast food, and horrifically disgusting Nurgle-like lack of hygiene.
