Yakuza Kiwami (the next gen remake of the first game) drops at the end of the month, and because Yakuza 0 (prequel to the entire series) is fucking awesome, (Note: I haven’t played it yet but @BadHabits currently is and I’ve watched him stream it,) I figured I’d finally get around to playing 4. I’ve had it for over a year now but because reasons hadn’t been able to play it until now, as well as 5, which is next, but it’s every bit as awesome as I remembered the little bit I got to play at a friend’s house a few years ago.

Personally, I think the Yakuza series is one of Sega’s underrated gems, because despite it being all in Japanese, which I suppose for some bro gamers, the lack of English subbing and Westernized familiarity is a turnoff, it’s probably got one of the best storylines (though it’s gotten kind of convoluted over the years because of all the characters you play in one game,) I’ve come across in a while.

The characters are well fleshed out - Kazuma Kiryu and Shu Akiyama are prime examples of this, along with Goro Majima. Kiryu is the main character of the series, but in every game, you go a bit deeper into his backstory and personality. Call me a moralfag if you will, but I liked Akiyama from the get go, because he really doesn’t have any negative ulterior motives behind what he does - he just wants to help people, even if it means tangoing with the yakuza. Though you don’t actually get to play as Majima until 0, (canonically; you can play as him in the zombie spinoff Dead Souls,) he starts out as the main antagonist, but as the series progresses, you find out a lot about who he is and what makes him tick and how loyal he is to his sworn brother, Taiga Saejima, and his respect for Kiryu.

As for gameplay, you have your run-of-the-mill random encounters, where you can use various fight styles (in the newer games,) and utilize objects in the vicinity to smash your enemies with. For instance - though you can’t use a bike or motorcycle in-game for transportation, you sure as hell can pick them up and bwang a low level street punk over the head with them.

Mini games and side quests - If anyone was following the (now dead) thread I made about my experience with FFXV*, I am all about the side quests. What always kills me with the Yakuza games is that although the main story is very serious and straightforward, the side quests are some of the most ridiculous shit you’ll come across. For example, in Yakuza 0, you run into a woman who doesn’t speak Japanese so well and says she needs “a bizza.” Kiryu presumes she wants a pizza and goes to ... a burger joint to find one. He then is told they don’t sell pizza and he doesn’t know how to order one, so he has the poor girl at the counter do it for him. He returns said pizza, only to find out the woman needs a visa so she can stay in Japan. Things get wackier from there. Mini games - Yakuza is chock-full of mini games, such as batting cages, fishing, mahjong, claw machines, arcade games and pachinko. In Yakuza 4, there’s a massage parlor mini game, which isn’t weird, awkward or uncomfortable at all. -_-

It isn't a real Sega game if there's no hedgehog.

    What's a Sanic?

I was clearly referring to Ron "the hedgehog" Jeremy.

Oh, I don’t think they could get him over to Japan in a timely fashion to do his body scan for the most accurate of representations.

  10. Yakuza fans are a bunch of spergs who spend hours talking about their beefy anime men pole dancing and singing karaoke.
