Speaking as a student learning about the film industry, I can say that the industry is kind of fucked. I like to tell my friends that the more I learn about the industry, the more I want to get away from it. A big part of the problem is that budgets increase, when they should be decreasing. Instead of studios spending millions on big-budget movies with enormous crews, they should be spending considerably less on making more films with smaller crews.

Wow seems like we have a lot of cinema snobs around here. "I hate any movie that's fun. Please give me some boring artsy bullshit so that people know how so very cultured I am."

There's a difference between a competently made fun movie, and an incompetently made 'fun' movie. Deadpool is an example of a competently made fun movie, something like Jack And Jill would be an example of the latter. You know, the kind of movie where they use 'fun' as an excuse to sacrifice quality.

I'm not really picky with what constitutes a good movie, but sometimes it seems like any movie made by Hollywood in the era of Tumblr and social media sucks.

Yeah, Ghost in the Shell was disappointing.

The premise of GitS in its various forms is that the cyberisation of society is causing people to lose their personal identity. Imo, there's two things that contribute a lot to that.

    1) In the '95 movie (and SAC) cyberisation is as mundane a part of society as mobile phones are today. It's not just the Major who's full cyborg. Batou is full cyborg too, for example. He's actually capable of tanking grenades in Innocence. The Major specifically sought out a non-cyborg in Togusa to keep some degree of individuality in her unit, implying that the majority of Section 9 are cyborgs or at least very heavily cyberised (which is backed up by SAC, where only Togusa, Saito and Ishikawa are substantially organic). There's even a full factory production line for cyborgs that the Puppet Master hacks into to make a body for himself.

    2) The Major doesn't know how much of her memories are real and how much are fake, and the majority of the 95 movie is about her resulting identity crisis. She goes as far to wonder if she and Batou have real brains at all and if they're not just sentient robots programmed to think they are cyberised humans. The Puppet Master is a computer programme that gained sentience giving some legitimacy to the Major's belief that she may not be a real person.

This movie throws those things out the window. The Major is the only functional cyborg, other people just have enhancements, so the ramifications for society at large aren't quite the same. Likewise, Kuze, who replaces the Puppet Master, was once a real person rather than a computer programme. And she's told 2/3rds of the way into the movie that her life story as its been told to her is a lie, finds out for certain that she was once human, it's implied if she stops taking the medicine that's supposed to stop her body from rejecting her brain she might regain some of her old memories, and she gets to meet her Mom. So that's her identity crisis solved.

Sorry to come over all memberberry, but it's basically dumbed down to: "An evil corporation is stealing people to turn them into cyborgs because they're all evil and corporationey", and it just feels so below the potential quality of the IP.

Also how does the head of the evil corporation have a fucking spider tank? Even if they're the people who build spider tanks for the army, it's ridiculous. Does the CEO of General Dynamics have his own fully armed and functional M1 Abrams to defend his corporate interests in the real world? I'm pretty sure he doesn't. And Scarlett Johanssen was awful in it.

It's not a terrible movie or anything, but it just felt so bastardised. "Yeah, y'all are too stupid to understand nuance or do any thinking, so let's simplify the plot to the point where it bares fuck all similarity with the source material".

To be fair, I once showed the movie Dredd (which I love, so very much) to a few of my friends. They shut the movie off after about 15 minutes because they thought the opening was too slow-paced. Most people also focused mainly on the 'feminist' thing that was going on in the movie over the other themes that appeared in the movie.

Eddie Presley. Goddamn that movie was bad, and not in that way where it's so bad that it comes full circle and becomes good (i.e. The Room).

I mean movies that are legitimately fun. Like you said Deadpool is actually fun to watch. I'll go so far as to say the transformers are fun movies for the most part. They can be cheesey, and even bad in some places, but I still had fun watching them. It's just this attitude that movies have to be full of artistic merit to be enjoyable that I don't understand. Yeah movies like jack and jill use the fun as a way to say terrible and that's unfortunate.

Personally, here's my opinion of 'art' in movies. I believe that a movie can be considered art if there's passion and vision behind the project. So, a movie like Airplane! might be an example of what is arguably the lowest form of comedy, but I would consider it to be a movie with a lot of artistic merit because of the obvious passion and vision the people creating it had. The same could be said about Eraserhead, which is on the opposite side of the spectrum and more in line with what most people think of when they think of a movie with artistic merit.

The Transformers movies made by Michael Bay don't have vision or passion I think. Michael Bay has actually gone on record saying something akin to "these movies don't have to be good, they're made for 10-year old boys, not for anyone else," which I think is the wrong attitude to take. I mean, the platinum games Transformers game that came out a while ago was obviously made to appeal to 10-year old boys with it's bright visual style and simplistic combat, but some of it's design choices (like getting some of the original voice actors involved, and using fan favourite characters from all incarnations of the franchise) suggest that the developers were passionate about producing something cool that would appeal to fans of all ages.

As Yahtzee once said "A game where you can light squirrels on fire is art, despite what some people might say about how juvenile it is".

That movie isn't particularly slow. Do they only watch movies like Crank or other ADD-paced things?

I don't know. I guess they were used to action movies that start off with some kind of action scene, or an assurance that there will be an action scene at some point.

I don't know how popular an opinion this is, but I refuse to acknowledge any Terminator films after T2 because they all just look like nostalgia cash grabs.

When I posted about Birdman earlier in this thread, this is exactly the audience I thought it was aimed at.

How about Un Chien Andalou? Not a particularly modern choice, but probably more artsy than Birdman. I haven't seen Birdman, so I don't know if it's good or bad.

I completely agree with this as how to consider whether something has any artistic merit or not and I couldn't have put it better. It all comes down to whether there was any passion/vision versus if it was made for cash grab reasons.

A really good example of one franchise that's gone in both directions is Fantastic Four, particularly the unreleased 1994 one versus the 2015 one. Both of them were make to beat contractual time limits to hold onto the rights, but they went in two completely different directions. With the 1994 one, it's pretty bad and the director could have completely phoned it in after being told it was never going to be released, but he became determined and said "You know what, we're going to make a movie that's so good for having as small a budget as we have that you'll have to release it." The guy read the comics every night to make sure he was on track with characterization and the entire cast gave it their fucking all (even if they're bit actors at best). Both because they grew up with the comics and they knew this was basically their resume for their next gig. I really don't give two shits about the Fantastic Four in general but this movie's the only one that got the group dynamic right, even if the effects were low-budget enough that LasagnaCat is better produced. It was really not that good, but it was still definitely art and sadly the best Fantastic 4 movie IMO.

The 2015 one, on the other hand, was also made to keep the rights from relapsing from Fox back to Marvel. And it's incredibly obvious how little of a fuck anyone gave making this. The director reportedly was an asshole to the cast and crew and occasionally showed up drunk, the studio kept demanding reshoots of scenes and didn't care how they were much lower-effort, and pretty much every actor except Michael B. Jordan was on autopilot the whole time. And if you're going to go off of that, just go watch Creed instead. The whole movie's just kind of unsettling and it's an absolute slog, and mostly it was made for a cash/rights grab and nothing else. Not art.

    This movie! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4472596/

Of course that fact that it's a SyFy original film doesn't do it any favours, but still. By the end of it I was hoping all those fucking girls would die!

  20. Valerian was Jupiter Ascending levels of bullshit (only not fun) and if I had seen it alone I would have walked out by the end of the first hour. The plot/dialogue/characterization was every single cliche you could think of. Half of the movie could be cut out and you wouldn't miss any major plot points or events. Every other line is supposed to be humorous, but I didn't laugh once. The male lead is a douchebag and not the Han Solo-esque scoundrel they were trying so hard to imitate. I even hate the visual effects because of how goddamn unnecessary they were to the movie. They took fucking plot detours just to show off what their computers could do and I hate them. I hate this movie. I want my money and 2 1/2 hours of my life back.

I hope it bombs and they lose millions of dollars. This thing is a piece of shit.
