You can see how they retconned the Borg over the course of the series.

Originally the creators wanted the Borg to be insectoid, but for budget reasons, they decided on cybernetic instead.

In Q Who? -- their first appearance -- they were a collective that didn't assimilate other species. They were born biological, became cybernetic, and assimilated technology from other species.

Then they were retconned into a collective who wanted to assimilate other species as well as technology by The Best of Both Worlds.

Then the Borg Queen appeared in First Contact and Voyager and the Borg became a collective who assimilated species and their technology, yet also somehow had a queen who was part of yet not part of the collective.

 

Damn, that's a headache and a half!

 

I noticed that the brig on the Enterprise D seems to be more comfy than quarters on the NX Enterprise about 2 centuries earlier.

Troi was originally supposed to be fully telepathic. Due to issues with the story that could've caused (they almost dropped her from the show) they made her an empath.

The Ferengi were originally going to be the new scary villains of the series, but they turned out to be the comic relief. So that's where the Borg came in.

 

So did Riker.

Remember those isolinear optical chips? They look like USB sticks.

Kind of like how those colored plastic rectangles from TOS are like floppy disks or data cassettes.

It's much cheaper to dress up a guy in pale makeup and a jumpsut with hoses and cheap electronic gizmos than some kind of insect thing anyway. But with current 3D animation technology being far more advanced and cheap than it was in 1989, they could've made the Borg insectoid much easier now.

At least Species 8472 is pretty intimidating.

 

Was Intimidating. After Scorpion 1+2, they never really came off as scary again.

Now that I'm older, I can appreciate how much of a player Riker was:

 

"I don't need your fantasy women!"

 

Pardon the bump, but is Voyager really as bad as people say it is? Doesn't seem that bad to me -- even though there's some silly stuff like the lizard thing and more technobabble that makes less sense than STNG.

 

It's really shitty early on. It gets decent around season 4. I actually quite enjoy some two-parters like Year of Hell and Killing game.

 

You should really judge it yourself and not let others influence your opinion. Its like people saying seasons 1 & 2 of TNG are awful, it really isnt, early TNG has some episodes that are pure Star Trek and its a pity that people overlook them, without giving them their fair due.

 

I liked some Voyager episodes - the one later in the series when they find a planet in a temporal field where for every second of ship time a few days pass on the planet, so they see the planet go from the stone age to sending antimatter ships to pull them out of the temporal field.
There was an episode when they thought they were fighting in World War II. The hologram doctor has some good ones - he becomes a singing sensation for aliens who don't know what music is and another where he has a family, in which the son is a punk who hangs with Klingons. He also finds his creator and finds out he's a failure and most of his holograms are scrubbing antimatter conduits aboard ship. Also Tuvok and Chikotay are pretty cool.
There were some bad ones too - the captain and IIRC Paris devolve and become a lizard family. And Ensign Kim is pretty boring.
