So I frequently monitor Chris's Patreon to see if he posted anything new/ if anyone else has pledged him money...and I realized something

    upload_2018-4-5_13-11-22.png
Keep this in mind... According to Patreon he has 27 patrons, and makes 777 a month

    Well

He has no patrons over 20 dollars- and only 17 at that. 17*20=340, and 3 patrons with 10 dollars is 30, so he makes 370 a month, and only 20 patrons

I am highly unfamiliar with Patreon, so how can Chris be making anything that doesn't end in a 0, and why have they not updated it? I also know he used to have about 2 50 dollar patrons, but Im guessing they pulled out since Chris has not put anything up in a few months, he is known not to deliver rewards, and technically he should not have a Patreon since he did a tier-giveaway (As in "You will be entered in this contest if you give ___ a month (for him its 20)- he also never announced the winners. Patreon has never replied to reports, so who knows

I've never used it, but I'm sure its not a rigid 'pay this amount' system. I think it counts people who have pledged over 20-49 dollars as the 20 dollar bracket.

Ah okay- I do see the "Or more" per thing, so I guess thats where the '777' comes from...but why does it say 27 patrons if theres only 20?

Not sure. He might have a few 1$ patrons that don't get counted since all I'm seeing in your post are people over 10$.

I guess the 7 patrons who aren't counted in the tiers are between $1-$9. Keep in mind that with Patreon you can pledge whatever you want, you don't select an amount to pledge from a rigid list of tiers. The tiers are there to entice you to spend a certain amount.

On a related note, the Patreon's that I've seen (By Youtubers, Game Designers and Animators), the tiers are much lowers. The lowest ones (the ones where you get things like free previews and early access to content) are usually $1-$5 to entice people into contributing. It's a bit odd that Chris's free preview tier is $10.

As for the $20 one, did anyone ever actually get their rewards for that one? I've seen that question asked before, but I don't think I've ever seen an answer. Based on past behaviour, he might have shipped the first few copies of autographed Sonichu #0, then never shipped out any more copies to the rest of his patrons and his patrons who did receive their reward never receive another book, despite the promise.

I thought Chris made it so it was 10 dollars minimum.

You can't do that. $1 is always the minimum, $10 is just the lowest tier and the minimum he wants.

On a side note, Patreon's with lolcows and people known for drama tend to get lots of $1 pledges because only patrons can see certain posts. If Chris was smart he'd use his Patreon like a blog with posts locked behind a paywall. Guaranteed he'd get at least $50 more a month.

It is just annoying how they are making almost 800 dollars a month when people with a lot more talent and consistency (and care for fans) struggle to make money.

But I guess people enjoy paying for a (presumably) dead Patreon where the tier prizes are never met (3 books a month, when there's only 13 official books done)

Well, you need to keep in mind that those people rely on more than just Patreon. A $350 Patreon could be supplemented by 4 $50 commissions a month, an Indiegogo, a Kickstarter and ad revenue (from Youtube and Newgrounds) which might result in more money than they advertise. The real money problems for creative people begin when they start hiring extra help. $4000 a month isn't enough to live on if you're paying a guy to manage your social media accounts, and a guy to edit your videos plus the cost of the equipment and software you need.

Oh I know all that! I mean Chris in general- usually people use Patreon to help fund whatever they are making (website payments, equipment, cast payments, etc) and they usually have another source of income to help pay for finances and But Chris just uses it more as a "donations" box- Hasnt worked on Sonichu in over 2 months (or shown progress), and still resorts to e Begging/selling Cole's things to make money.

Thats funny- Chris was also begging Cole for money not too long ago, and is now selling Cole's things for money

You know, I actually like the fact Chris makes more money on Patreon than DSP.

Oddly enough, someone I still talk to every so often backs Chris. and he's show me a couple of pictures of the signed Sonichu comics. I've called him extremely stupid for doing so and pointed to Chris' Lego and vidya-fueled spending habits. Even moreso when the first one was shittily bound and done with printer paper, but he's up to issue 4 now and somewhere in between Chris improved it drastically. As in, good enough that there's no way in hell he hasn't outsourced it to someone who binds and prints comic books for more than freelance work. No idea if the pages are all the second round of retcons he posted on Facebook but it sounds like Chris has been consistent in shipping them out, surprisingly.

Probably would use that excuse for as to why he's still e-begging, selling other people's stuff, and isn't working on Sonichu, too. Seriously, the patreon money should be donated to a charity who'll actually do something worthwhile with it instead.

As to why there's a discrepancy between the number of backers and people in tier lists, I've never actually used Patreon so I've gotta agree with Yamcha, I can only guess that the 7 people not on a list either donated between $1 and $9 or they haven't actually paid for their first pledge yet and plan to back out right before they get charged. I do find it extremely amusing, though, that Chris is making more money than Andrew Dobson, DSP, and Spoony's stragglers.

i think Chris said a while back, since thats what a lot of people were doing that to get access to comic pages, that he set it so that as soon as you pledge it takes the money out right away.

Whether or not people can do that is beyond my knowledge.

He can't do that either, however there are no rules against waiting until he's actually got the money before shipping out rewards. If you pledge $50 on March 1st for a tier-reward, he's allowed (and entirely justified), in waiting until April 1st when he's actually received the money to start shipping out rewards. I'm not too familiar with Patreon so I might be getting this part wrong, but there might be a feature that allows creators to 'lock' Patrons into their pledges so that if you pledge $50 in March you can't unpledge the money or change your pledge until the next month.

I know some Patreon artists who get harassed by people who do that kind of thing and demand their reward within a week or so of pledging (because they're just going to remove their pledge when they get the reward). I know that Hirtes did that with some furry artists.

I feel like Patreon would give creators some kind of option to do that- since there's a lot of people who will donate the bare minimum for "exclusive" images/videos/ etc, then freeboot it and share it online, then unpledge. I know of a reviewer who does Patreon-Exclusive videos, and people get very angry at him for making some reivews Patreon only-all he says is they need to donate just 1 dollar (or more) to see the review (1 review or so out of the several he puts out each month). There are also artists who make Patreon-Exclusive content (usually porn), what stops people from 'pledging' an amount, copying the image, then sharing it online as they unpledge from the person?

Because Chris takes the L'Oréal slogan too seriously: "Because you're worth it".

Remember, this is the guy who thought a poorly tailored, mold infested shirt he wore was worth at least $12,000 dollars
