    Mods have existed for PC games since...well PC games existed. Some games still have vibrant communities full of people pumping out a wide menagerie of custom content. Certain mods have even gone on to become IPs in their own right such as Counter-Strike and Killing Floor.

    Everything is better with mods.
    What I like best about mods us how they extend a game's playability. A favorite example of mine (because I'm a fan) is the Sims modding community. There is still stuff being made for The Sims 2, a game that came out in 2004.

    I have a friend who uses a vine sauce corrupter (not sure if its rom hack) and when we used it, the both of us were laughing like maniacs at some of the stuff he made/discovered using that corrupter

    Modding has changed. It's no longer about fun, passion or hobbies. It's an endless series of transactions, sold by modders and companies. Modding, and its improvement of gaming, has become a well-oiled machine. Modding has changed. Price tagged consumer pay price tagged dev, use price tagged mod. Microtransactions inside their games enhance and regulate their experience. Coding control. Information control. Emotion control. Community control. Everything is monitored, and kept under control. Modding has changed. The age of progress has become the age of control. All in the name of averting catastrophe from money hungry industry. And he who controls the community, controls the industry. Modding has changed. When the community is under total control, modding... becomes business.

    Far as mods go, I never really use any beyond some mods for TES games that give better faces and UI's. I did try dabbling in Oblivion modding even though that just meant some crappy custom race companions and a few texture edits to an existing mod.

    I myself liked the River City romhack that used Wilford Brimley. The shit i-Mockery reviewed for rom-hacks was comedy gold.
