Is kind weird to see the guy who almost killed the franchise and the company which smothered Castlevania, being the responsible for this revival.

  2. 1.) Considering Sakamoto is also responsible for (in my opinion) the three best 2D Metroid games in the series I see no reason to be skeptical about this remake. Other M has proven his weakness as a Scenario Writer (at least for longer scenes, he wrote the script/dialogue in Fusion and that was some good shit but a lot shorter) and he's only listed as a Producer for this game. I'm willing to say he's learned from his mistake because, seriously, Nintendo knows how shit Other M was.

2.) The Lords of Shadow games were a joint effort that include Hideo Kojima among the guilty parties. Regardless, Konami was already a sinking ship in the video game department and their properties doomed. Still, I can't dislike a company for trying something new with an old franchise. It's not like they retconned the established canon, either, it was more like an alternate universe type deal.

You know what the sad thing about Other M is. Reading the synopsis online, a person would think that the game has a pretty cool story. But, everything about the game aside from the story ruins the experience. Plus, Adam was such a cool character in Metroid Fusion, and part of what made him great is how little he was shown. We mostly learned what we knew about Adam from Samus talking about how great he was, and the first time we really see Adam he's doing something pretty cool despite his severe limitations. Then, Other M ruined Adam's mystique by making him a full character who wasn't nearly as cool or interesting,

  4. I was just looking at the series Wikipedia page and something in the subsection about the turbulent Metroid movie development caught my attention. Around 2007, when some Hollywood people were trying to make shit happen, they approached Nintendo with all these questions about Samus' history, her motivations, her characterization, what have you. Standard shit when you're writing a script for a movie. Nintendo couldn't answer these as the games have rarely delved into those areas in great detail. One of the reasons why they scrapped the movie idea around that time is because Nintendo wanted to answer those questions for themselves rather than leave it up for Hollywood to decide. Something I completely understand as a creative person, myself. Metroid is their baby (ha) and they wanted to deal with this themselves.

Production on Other M appears to have started immediately after that, and its entire focus was an attempt to build upon these questions. I think Nintendo made Other M not because it was the natural direction to take the franchise in, but because they suddenly felt pressured to. Sakamoto was the obvious choice to helm the project considering his then perfect track record for Metroid games and the story he wrote for Fusion. Except the project was too ambitious for him and the addition of fucking Team Ninja didn't help matters.

Taking all this into consideration it makes perfect sense why Other M was a doomed project from the get-go.

I got the new SNES mini and decided to try Super Metroid. I've never played any of the games, but I've gotten hooked on it pretty quickly. I did appriciate the quick recaps on the previous games at the beginning.

If anyone has a hard time with the original NES Metroid, I would suggest trying out the GBA remake, Zero Mission.
I said remake, but it's really more of a re-imagining of the original, making it more inline with Super Metroid and Fusion.
