Lolcow Definition and Classification


The principle of what constitutes a “lolcow” is a phenomena that has become of interest with in the past decade or so due to the rise of image boards such as /cow/ on 8chan and forums such as Kiwifarms.

History of the term “lolcow”

Definition of a Lolcow
Lolcows are people of interest who engage in eccentric behavior or activities that a third party would reasonably be expected to find amusing or have an interest in. The eccentric behavior by the person in question must be voluntary, engaged in on a regular basis, and not due to duress by another person or due to an illness over which he/she has no control over.

Under this definition:
A person who for example engages in eccentric behavior due to schizophrenia is not a lolcow.
A person who is under duress by another person to engage in eccentric behavior is not a lolcow.
A person who engages in eccentric behavior because of temporary circumstances such as a costume party, a gaming tournament or convention is not a lolcow.

Does fame or celebrity status determine whether someone is a lolcow? No. Lolcows run the spectrum from ordinary people to verified celebrities.

Does material wealth determine whether someone is a lolcow? No. Lolcows can come from any socioeconomic background.

Does political orientation determine whether someone is a lolcow? No. Lolcows are found on both sides of the political spectrum. However a lot of attention has been given to lolcows who are SJWs (i.e. social justice warriors).

Does being on the autism spectrum determine whether someone is a lolcow? While being on the autism spectrum tends to be strongly associated with lolcow status it is not the sole factor.

Does sexual orientation or gender identity determine whether someone is a lolcow? While a significant number of lolcows may identify as transgender, it does not necessarily follow that being transgender automatically makes someone a lolcow.

Does being a lolcow reflect positively or negatively on someone? The lolcow status by itself is neutral. It is what people do with that status that determines whether it is an asset or a liability.

Lolcow Classification System
The measurements for a lolcow classification system should be geared towards an objective standard with criteria that can be replicated. Otherwise a measuring instrument that fails to meet this test would be of little use.

Lolcow Classification (Horizontal Parameters)

1. Personal Status Lolcows: This classification is

3. Interest Related Lolcows
4. Social Relationship Related Lolcows
5. Miscellaneous Lolcows

Lolcow Classification (Vertical Parameters)

Tier 0 – Borderline Lolcows

Tier 1 – Lower Grade Lolcows: Lolcows at this level may have a limited presence on chan boards or forums. While the person’s internet presence may be quite large, their actual following is limited compared to more traditional lolcows at the Tier 2 level. Level 1 lolcows usually don’t have a significant income from their status.

Tier 1/Tier 2 is a level that is above Tier 1 but below Tier 2. Kenneth Engelhardt is considered a Lower to Moderate Grade (Tier 1/Tier 2) lolcow due to a presence on Encyclopedia Dramatica and at least two forums. People at this level may have an interest following equal to that of Tier 2 lolcows but not necessarily the notoriety of Tier 2 lolcows.

Tier 2 – Moderate Grade Lolcows: Lolcows at this level have an established presence on chan boards, and a more expanded presence on Encyclopedia Dramatica compared to Tier1/Tier2 lolcows. They have a regular presence in forums and have a certain amount of fame in specific niches. Their internet footprint can be quite extensive though their celebrity status is less than your Tier 3 lolcows . Moderate grade lolcows can have a fan following ranging from average to thousands. It is usually at this level that the person in question acquires a status as a public figure. People at the Tier 2 level are usually not verified celebrities.

Tier 2 Lolcows include a lot of your well known lolcows such as Christine Weston Chandler, Joshua Moon owner of Kiwifarms, Isabel Rosa Araujo, and Sarah Guilbreaux (Pixyteri).

These people may have a sporadic or partial income from their lolcow status

Tier 3 – High Grade Lolcows: Lolcows at this level and above tend to be verified celebrities or defacto celebrities with following and interest equivalent to that of a verified celebrity. Weatherman Frankie McDonald for example has a following of tens of thousands and been featured on Canadian television even though he is not a verified celebrity. They may be mentioned on forums, chan boards and in the media as well as being referenced on the Wikipedia. People whose lolcow status has placed them as a verified celebrity on social media and public figure nationally but not to the extent of a Tier 4 lolcow. These people have a moderately active/active speaking schedule and/or earn a viable income off of their status. Weatherman Frankie, Brianna Wu, Zoe Quinn, Zinnia Jones are examples.

Tier 4 – Legendary Lolcows: People whose lolcow status has placed them as a verified celebrity on social media and public figure worldwide. These people have an active worldwide speaking schedule. David Icke is an example.

Beneficial/Detrimental Typology

1. Positive over the short-term
2. Positive over the long-term
3. Neutral over the short-term
4. Neutral over the long-term
5. Negative over the short-term
6. Negative over the long-term

Lolcow Syndrome can be positive or negative depending on how the person handles the status.

It always came off to me as something he attached to his online persona in order to seem more vulnerable. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit though.

 

How can this be a lolcow wiki without a page on Chris? Funnily enough, even though he made the thing, most of it is related to him. So, he made a website dedicated to making fun of himself.

Edit: come to think of it though, if he did make a fake ED, it would be the only ED half the time.
