I'm the first person to lash out at someone who thinks that insulting a woman's appearance makes for valid critisism. That said...

Also, I find that the best breakdowns of fan fiction come from people who know a thing or two about writing, not screaming into the camera.

 

I used to be a fan of Megan's, or at least a regular watcher that I'd use for background noise while I did other things. But naturally, when updates slow down, my attention goes elsewhere. It's probably for the best she hasn't done anything for a couple of years. She attempted to do an ongoing story arc of sorts, but it was pretty cringe-worthy. The only positive thing I can say about what she did is she was one of the biggest contributors who got an author to take down his infamous Land Before Time fic where the characters were sent to the future to experience 9/11, which was written as "tribute".

(This is kinda related to her "works", so I'll mention it, but I'll remove it if it's not appropriate.)

Some years back, there was drama between Megan and some obscure "critic" and on this one website she used to help run before it shut down because it was a dull TGWTG-wannabe site. And she also had a few bitch slaps with a fan fic writer simply because she tore into the fics (one of which was a Sonic/Pikachu rape fic) and said some nasty things about them (yes, they were terrible fics to begin with, but she was very harsh about them). Of course, the author's no saint, either, so this drama went on for a couple of months or so, and it was pretty pathetic.

 

I personally think that the main problem with Fanfic Critic is that fanfiction stories mostly suck with a few exceptions. Very few are bad enough to be interesting, and very few are good enough to be entertaining when read by a woman at her pace for 20-40+ minutes.

So, saying that a lot of FanFictions are bad or weird isn't a new or interesting or entertaining observation. Reading a good fanfiction isn't particularly interesting either.

 

Her review of Sonichu was simply dreadful. Most of her criticisms amounted to holding up a piece of paper that looked blank because of motion blur and saying "THE COMIC I DREW AS A KID IS BETTER THAN THIS" without any explanation.

Also she hated Chris putting his text in all caps, which is one of the few things he got right about making a comic. Comics traditionally use all-caps for various reasons, not least of which being that it's easier to read for the short bursts that dialogue and narration captions are supposed to use.

Basically, out of her element, reviewing a subject she doesn't understand using the standards of one she barely understands, and unwarranted self-importance about having doodled a comic as a kid and not having anything to say about why Sonichu is less than perfect beyond claiming her own work is better and not showing it to us for comparison.

 

So in other words, Chris knows more about comics than she does?

 

The only videos I ever saw from Fan Fic Critic was her dramatic reading of one of Sindragon's fics where he fucks the legendary pokemon from gen 2 (which he thought were cats, even though FFC insisted that they're dogs). She did a two-parter with another dude who had an autistic lisp.

Megan back around 2011 tried to apply to be a TGWTG contributor, though as evident by her DA journal, she was rejected--I think this was around the time when Bennett was still doing Masterpiece Theater, or was planning on retiring it. She did do blogs on there, but no one was reading any of the blogs on the site, so she stopped with that. I thought it was after two or three posts, but this journal mentioned blogs having to be approved of by an admin, which might've been what killed the blogs.

I forgot just how autistic those journals were, now that I go back through them. In between announcements of her putting a new episode up, she was complaining about something or bringing up the drama-of-the-week she was having with someone. One would think she was in high school or middle school, not a (then) 21-year-old college dropout.

 

I only knew her because of BlackBusterCritic.

 

I also seem to recall her complaining about Chris using exclamation points for most of the dialogue, even though most comic writers did so because exclamation points were more likely to survive the printing process than periods.

 

Exactly so. She doesn't understand comics and then complains about them being different from purely written fanfic.

Real comics default to using all caps text and using exclamation points and question marks as the default punctuations. The way you shape your word balloons and place words within them is supposed to be your primary way of controlling the flow of sentences (though Chris does horribly on that front).

Isn't this the person who started her reviews with the main title music from the Sweeney Todd film adaptation? Pretty intense way to start a show making fun of someone's Harry Potter/Buffy fanfic. I'm no Linkara fan, but at least his interminable theme song is on point. Many an online reviewer has tried to ride Chris's coattails for Internet fame. I think the easiest way you can tell a decent one from the rest is if the people involved are having fun with Sonichu vs. those who just want to get angry about it. Sonichu is going to outlast their videos regardless.

 

Well who wouldn't want some cosplay to cheer them up?
