HUMAN BEINGS MAKE LIFE SO INTERESTING. DID YOU KNOW THAT IN A UNIVERSE SO FULL OF WONDERS, THEY HAVE MANAGED TO INVENT BOREDOM?

My favorite book series. A philisophical/comedy series spanning 41 novels taking place on a flat world on the backs of four elephants riding on a giant turtle through space, with a variety of main characters, including Death, a handful of cynical witches, a cowardly wizzard that doesn't know any magic, and the city watch.

If you haven't read any of them, you should.

TP is one of my heroes. The man had such a elegant way with humor.

Been reading Raising Steam but it's hard to get myself to finish his newer books since I know there are no more being made.

I guess I've got it made since it's been taking me forever to make a dent in the series. I've only read about twelve of the books myself, but I was kind of sad to see that his daughter was dropping the series after only one book when she was supposed to take the torch from him.

My best friend got me started on the series years ago, around when Night Watch or Thud came out can't remember which.

Best way to read is in order though. It's amazing to see his comedy within his books and his social commentary change over the years.

That's what I've heard, but after reading The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic, other books in the series caught my interest more than Equal Rites did. Then again, I started with Wee Free Men to begin with so reading in order from then was kind of a lost cause.

I binge read 90% of the series back when my local library actually accepted requests regarding what to stock. Our location wound up having almost all of them at some point or another and they stayed on the shelves for a long time afterward.

This is one of my favorite fantasy series ever. Pratchett's dwarfs influenced my dwarves more directly than any other version of the race in fantasy fiction...and influenced my fantastical human cultures quite a bit too.

I haven't read Snuff yet and may or may not have missed one or two others by the wayside.

Thud will go down as one of the greatest books I've ever read.
I've never felt so sorry for midgets and rocks in my life.

Very much so. He has to stop a plot that would freeze time on Discworld, thus preventing anyone from dying.

Aside from holding up the world, how much do the elephants and turtle play into the story? Do they ever stop doing what they do?

There's a book called The Fifth Elephant that I haven't read yet and the Turtle does a thing in the first two books. I'd tell you but that would be a spoiler.

It's probably mostly coincidence that the official tabletop RPG books for the series happen to be my favorite tabletop RPG system on the whole. Speaking of which, GURPS just recently put out the Discworld RPG adapted from the fourth edition of the ruleset (previously there were GURPS Discworld and GURPS Discworld Also, for 3rd edition).

It's really good stuff even if you're not a roleplayer.

I'm a huge fan of Discworld, and I must say that Pterry's death was a profound loss to me. I've read many of his works and own most of them. They're the only books I can get my brother to read, in fact. My favorite are the Death series followed by the Wizards.

On the GURPS forums I and several other posters recently had it brought to our attention that "Hersheba" was a pun. Pratchett was so good about his wordplay that this one managed to slip past my radar, and that of many other long-time series fans. Djelibeybi on the other hand, I got right away.

There are probably other jokes that flew right over my head.

Is there a giant tree in the center of Discworld like there is in Norse mythology?

A giant mountain. The gods live on top of it.
