Which is why they should have left it as a surprise instead of using it as a marketing tool.

Sure, and I think fundamentally that's what the movie basically was, an watchable but mostly unremarkable sci-fi flick with a fun Chariot of the Gods vibe.

That's it's failing, because what it was attached to we deserve (lol how pompous does that sound?) more, we knew who was making it, and what it was gonna start to tell us, but as we all are saying it was a par sci fi movie.

I know we all were drooling to know more of the who what where and why of xenomorphs, even maybe how they became to be or we did. We got a meh sci fi about life's start. I think it got extra flak because what we wanted out of it and what it's attached too. I liken it to the star wars prequels. We went in thinking oh boy we are gonna learn how vader is so bad ass, we got Jar Jar... While not as bad, it wasn't really related at all, at least SW had a few name drops and flavor where this had next to nothing aside a company name .... Even young Obi Wan had a light sabre to relate to.

My big beefs with Prometheus was that the characters were not written or directed that well; and yeah, it's attached to the wrong universe. A big gripe of mine was in the set design and visuals, mainly because it completely failed to match the relatively similar aesthetics of the other films in the universe; which was grungy. If the latter was cut It'd help, and if the characters were tighter (smaller cast and they're written to cause less unanswered questions) the film would've been good.

There's only one alien Covenant I'd watch a movie about, and they have a leader that's voiced by Michael Wincott.

Alien was about space truckers on a grimy old ship trying to make a buck. Then they are confronted by a terrifying creature that they don't understand. It was awesome.

With the new movies almost every other line of dialogue seems to be some sort of pseudo-intellectual philosophical rambling about the meaning of life. Mark Kermode said in his review that Ridley needs a decent script to make a good movie, and I'm inclined to agree.
And I say this as someone who thought Prometheus was ok and got way more hate than it warranted.

I have cautious optimism for this film.
On one hand Alien has produced two fantastic movies and at least a few quality video games. On the other hand, its also produced a lot of shit. It looks a lot more like the original movie than Prometheus, but the fact the Xenomorph appears so much in the trailer and appears to be CGI isn't comforting.
It could be great, ok, or horrible; you just can't tell from the trailer.

Apparently they used animatronics and people in suits for the majority of the Neomorph scenes, just CGI touch-ups here and there. Of course, if it just looks like CGI then that was all pointless...

    SHIT WAS FRESH!!

Ok it's not a perfect film, I have a few gripes but seeing it on the big screen was good. I kinda saw the twist a touch early, but I think it was meant to be hinted at for people who know the lore.

I thought they did a good job (movie takes place in 2097) making it feel like a realistic sci fi, everything looked like maybe 20 years ahead, and loose enough with "hyper sleep" they don't tech mumbo jumbo it, they just let it happen since it's important for a lore with slower than light long term space travel.

It stands out really well in a good way, the neomorphs are puppets etc. This movie will look great in 20 years. Acting was good, was cool to see Danny McBride in a serious role. Little touches to the earlier movies were nice. But in theory could see it with out knowing any of them.

There is about 70 years in canon from this film to Alien, there may be up to 4 movies to cover them.
So Shaw needs to be expanded on, that kinda felt lame. I think I get what they hinted at... but still glazed over. Yo, David is fucking BONKERS. Love it. I think Fassbender killed the roles he had. Frankly some people complained about the airlocking, I thought it was a nice and clear homage but also fit well with the "realistic" tech. They were brutal monsters and a AR15 wouldn't do shit to them.

I just saw the movie. I will say that the twist at the end was pretty easy to see coming, but that could be because pretty much every movie I've seen in the last two decades or so have had twists, so now I literally think about what the twist might be during the last ten minutes or so of pretty much every movie I watch.

The action scenes were wonderful, and David makes a great villain. I look forward to the next film.

I guess I saw a different movie than you guys, since it was actually somehow worse than even what I was expecting, which honestly wasn't much.

My big bitching points are the opening theme not only completely failing to set the tone of the movie correctly, but it also is lazily reprised at the end in a move that felt like I would have done if I was a film school student. It also has an anemic and bland cast outside of our protagonist, Tennessee, and Fassbender as Data. It drops a bridge on Prometheus if you liked that film, and was not very good at either building up the tension like the first two, or doing something fun, dumb, or new like the other two.

Honest to God would've walked out if it wasn't for the fact I paid for it.

Just saw the film Yesterday, a little late I know. Still its a testament to how improved it was that there were still plenty of other people in the theater. Not as good as the original two but better than what we've been getting in the franchise. My main issue was how dumb the characters were. What made the first two movies good was that characters mistakes were believable if they even made any, it was chilling to see a team of smart people getting killed in a horror movie. Here they just keep fucking up, but at least they aren't genius level scientist like in Prometheus. Speaking of you really have to see Prometheus to know what the fuck is happening with David. Other than that it was a pretty Solid release.

Another thing to consider is that the characters in Alien and Aliens was that the characters were dumb because they were inexperienced. The Characters in Alien had never seen or heard of a xenomorph before and most of the characters in aliens were dumb because they were picked to investigate BECAUSE they were dumb. It's a testament to the film that the only savvy character in Aliens was the survivor from the last film.

I actually enjoyed Prometheus and was looking forward to exploring the lore of the whole engineer race thing. This movie teased that it would do this and then said fuck you heres xenomorphs and gay robots instead.

I think that the 'gay robot' scene might have actually been similar to the sections in Portal where Glados would try to appeal to Chell's emotions with things like "All you've managed to break is my heart."

Basically, David has no idea how to tempt a machine who has recently started feeling emotions. He can't use logic to convince him to help him, so instead he tries to form an emotional connection, but the only thing he knows of 'love' is kissing. In David's mind, all that he needs to do to make someone fall in love with him is to kiss them and say nice things, much like Glados.

On that note, Portal 3. Glados becomes an android and tries to make-out with Chell during the final boss battle.
