At least they’re obsessing over adult entertainment and something that was a pioneer of sci-fi and pop culture in general. A lot of Trekkies seem to be pretty intelligent people with a genuine interest in science and exploration. Bronies all just seem to be socially awkward halfwits, even the ones that are trying to be “ironic”. And a lot of them jerk to cartoon pony porn. It’s not sad it’s tragic.

One thing that I do think Bronies have in common with Trekkies from 30 or so years ago is that they are overly sensitive and defensive towards the inspiration of their fandom. This is nowhere near as defining a characteristic of Trekkies these past 10-15 years given the explosion of nerd culture, which has had both positive and negative outcomes. The longevity of Star Trek has validated the Trekkies. I just don't see that happening with MLP. Yeah, yeah, the franchise has been around for decades, but most of that fan base was gained from FiM. And that fan base wasn't even big enough to prevent the modestly budgeted movie version from being a disappointment at the box office. Meanwhile, Bronies will froth at the mouth talking about the positive morals of an episode that has about as much depth as a Little Golden Book but with shittier drawings.

I’d rather compare Bronies to Harry Potter fans. Great for kids and nostalgia, but if you’re 30 and writing fan fiction and define your personality by what kind of pony/Hogwarts house you’re in maybe it’s time to grow up a little.
OT, but Chris is suuuucchhh a Hufflepuff, am I right guys?

^ Harry Potter is pretty bullshit. I’ve seen all the movies and the only really good one is Prisoner of Azkaban. It’s a cool world they created but the story and characters are pretty weak and boring. And the fan base is particularly cringe, not brony level but still cringe. It’s no Neverending Story, now that’s a fantasy flick.

I'm glad to know! Reminded a local high school near me had a "Harry Potter Club" at some point.

Didn't the concept of "bronies" started out as a joke/shitposting/trolling on 4chan?

I read the first book a few years ago after some peer pressure and I said it was okay for a kid's book. My friends flipped their shit over me being so dismissive. I told them that maybe they should read Midnight's Children or One Hundred Years of Solitude. Both have fantasy elements in them and both deal with more adult shit than kids trying to get through middle school.

This is true in a lot of ways, especially with how ST invented the idea of autistic fandoms and conventions and whatnot. The original Mary Sue was a Star Trek fanfiction. At the same time, Trek legitimately deserves a place as a vehicle for serious science fiction. Some (a lot) of the episodes are goofy fanservice, but some of the great Trek episodes like Let That Be Your Last Battlefield are subversive masterpieces of the genre.

Never watched MLP, but I don't think there's really any substance to it beside a bland "be nice and friendly" message for kids.

That's pretty much how I feel, and you're right about MLP having a very limited message. It is a show aimed at 6 year old girls to teach basic morals.

Star trek tackled things like racism, sexism, euthanasia, freedom vs tyranny, the ethically grey area of using knowledge brought to us by mass murderers, when violence is necessary, and what constitutes a 'human.'

MLP teaches... its nice to share. Don't spread rumors. listen to your parents. don't steal. ... pretty much the same stuff you'd see on seseme street minus the counting and spelling.

Let’s not forget the main purpose of the MLP cartoon isn’t to teach life lessons or even really to tell a good story, it’s to sell toys. No different than Transformers or HeMan, but those fan bases aren’t nearly as cringey. It’s kinda weird that Chris never got into HeMan now that I think of it, with all the scantily clad muscle men and homoerotic undertones.

    This is true.

So Sesame Street is a smarter show than My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Well, Sesame Street was founded to teach inner city kids things to prepare them for school.

And MLP hasn't done anything as heart wrenching as not sugar coating Mr. Hooper's death.

Amazing if they can't even get past that.

    BINGO!
