I wonder when someone will nut up and do the ultimate fuck you to film: A Citizen Kane remake? Because I am expecting that along with Redlettermedia's prediction of Star Wars until we are all dead.

They already committed the ultimate sin by making the Wizard of Oz a TV show called "Emerald City". It's a gritty, "realistic" re-imagining that made Dorothy a nurse, Toto is no longer the dog's name but the Munchkin word for dog, the Munchkins are tribal people who wear pelts and face paint that stand at eight feet tall. The Yellow Brick Road is a cobblestone path that's covered in pollen & the flying monkeys are now brass drones shaped like monkeys. By the way, the witch that Dorothy kills in the tornado scene is the Witch of the East rather than the West, the Scarecrow is just some dude with amnesia somebody crucified for some reason, ect.

It's a joke with a forty minute to hour long running time per episode. I don't think I need to explain why subtracting the whimsy from the Wizard of Oz defeats its own purpose. Emerald City is so far removed from what was not only intended, but also written by L. Frank Baum that if not for the constant references and context hints, it would have no way of identifying itself as an adaptation of his works & it would stand as a completely original story.

Funny thing is that I've actually been expecting this to happen since the mid 2000s, because that was when this was first announced.

Oh wow. That's as dumb as that Return to Oz movie. At least that was surreal though.

The advantage of Return to Oz was it's aim was to expand on the first movie by shifting the focus on the Wizard himself and what a con artist he was. Emerald City, however, is just a complete bastardization.

Also, why can't any movie or TV show adaptation move past the second book? You could milk the Wizard of Oz the same way they did with Harry Potter and Percy Jackson by adapting every book one at a time.

Because cowardice and effort; it's why they keep fucking rebooting Spiderman and Supes too. Heck, I expect another round of that post yet another anemic return that still is millions of dollars that they pretend are gone when in actuality it's all pocketed.

If only Raimi didn't butcher Spiderman 3, then there'd be no need for a fucking reboot every time they green-light a shitty script.

I'd so want that, just to see what level of writing they'd do here. I just love to think Ernie didn't get that tree for nothing!

A filme where Rich Uncle Pennybags goes penniless could write itself if set during the Great Depression!

the oz you are fondly remembering is a remake of a remake of an adapted novel. there is no issue with remakes as long as it doesn't suck.

No, it is legit shit. It's one of the most boring and poorly paced shows I've ever watched.

Funny enough there is actually gonna be a movie about GamerGate based on Zoe Quinn's book, but it was cancelled even along with the book deal. Disregard that, I'm dumb, see below post

Actually whoops got it wrong. It's just the book deal getting dropped by Simon & Schuster, so well a movie and book deal is still possible.

Is there any particular reason why Hollywood hasn't tried to remake Akira into a live-action film yet?

I hope more publishers follow S&S' head and give a pass to this.

These things do take time, don't forget how long it took for us to get that Speed Racer live action flick years ago.
