Discuss movies you think don't get enough attention.

A while back I saw the movie "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil", a parody of the killer hillbilly horror trope. It got a limited screening in theaters so most likely not a lot of people got to even see it. Hopefully, it should still be on Netflix.

 

I've always thought that Brick was a film that never got enough attention. Especially since the guy who made it would eventually make Breaking Bad, which is actually kind of similar.

 

That's a great film; it's a rare balance of smart and stupid.

A film I enjoyed is Drown from 2015, a really great psychological thriller. It's set in an Australian lifeguarding club and deals with ideas about masculinity and sexuality. Great soundtrack, fantastic performances all round and trippy visuals as well as a completely gripping conclusion.

 

Maybe this is better known than I'm giving it credit for, but Sam Raimi's A Simple Plan is one of his best, and a type of film we probably won't see from him again after the success of the Spider-man movies. It also has one of Bill Paxton's best performances and a really eerie Danny Elfman score that bristles with detuned banjos and pianos and clanging metal.

 

Yeah, it's kind of a sleeper and definitely outside of Raimi's usual style. I missed the credits when I first saw it and thought I was watching a Coen brothers movie until the end credits.

 

I recently watched Lost In Space, the 1998 film. I don't know if it's not well known (at least now), but critics generally don't like it. I think it's OK. Not great, but not that bad either.

The opening scene has some silly lines though. Like "this cold war just got hotter." Also some parts of the plot seem rushed or poorly developed.

Recently re-watched Radioland Murders, a comedy from 1994, with Brian Benben in the lead.

A lot of critics panned it at the time, but.......It's really not a bad movie. In fact, it's quite funny in some places.

 

I just watched a film called Brothers Bond tonight, and it was probably the funniest so-bad-it's-good movie I've ever seen in my life. Sadly, it was never released, and the only reason I saw it was because I'm childhood friends with the director's grandson, who currently owns the only copies of the movie. He's been telling me about the movie since we were 10, and I'm so happy I finally got to see it a whole decade later. As much as he wants to remaster and release it, it's the shame of his family and they don't want anyone seeing it or the other two movies his grandpa directed. It's a goddamn shame, since I can't even remember the last time I've laughed so hard at anything. I wish everyone here could see it, since it was easily the wildest god damned ride I've ever experienced.
