There was this one rumor that I thought was real (Because I was a stupid kid that would believe anything that I sounded cool) where I could unlock the ability to play as Super Sonic in all levels in Sonic Adventure.

 

Last rumor I heard was the final boss of Dark Souls 3 being a boss named "Countess of Ash." Some error made on Fextralife that later was removed.

 

In imagine that the less internet access there was, the more common vidya rumors were. Remember a time when strategy guides were physical books or in magazines like Nintendo Power?

 

Here's a good one: a small website that was hosted by Geocities started a hoax that you could unlock Toad in Smash Bros. Melee

I can see why they picked Toad for that rumor: he is pretty good in Mario Kart.

 

We've all heard of the "Luigi is playable in Super Mario 64 rumor" involving that star statue near Big Boo's Haunt, right?
Well, this rumor eventually became true when Luigi became playable in the DS remake (along with Wario and Yoshi), but in its place spawned a very similar rumor for said DS remake

The PS2-era GTA titles were like a rumor magnet.

Everyone knows about all the myths surrounding San Andreas, but pretty much all the PS2 GTA games had them

 

The Bigfoot rumors is one I'll remember. It all helps that with how big those worlds were to casual gamers on top of whatever one could find in the games like empty cars in the middle of the woods in San Andreas.

As for vidya rumors I heard, there was one for Armored Core 4 where the in-game arena had two missing slots for pilots. Some rumor claimed the pilots would be 9-Ball and Stinger, two important characters from the respective games, were arena pilots one could fight if they preordered the game but at some point it got debunked and I wouldn't be surprised if those blank spots were really just a reference to two in-game NPC's one would fight that were terrorist unaffiliated with the arena.

 

The biggest rumor on my playground was you can get to the Orange Islands if you stay on the S.S. Anne long enough. I was happy that the Sevii Islands in Fire Red and Leaf Green became a thing.

Then there was the whole "My Uncle Works for Nintendo" I remember calling out this one kid since my parents were friends with his uncle that his uncle was actually a surgeon and he got really pissed at me.

 

One of the more elaborate ones I remember hearing back in school is that you could get Togepi in the Gen I Pokemon games by using the Itemfinder 10 times in every square in Mt. Moon, which would give you an Egg as an Item. You then had to beat the Elite Four 100 times for it to hatch.

Context: EGM had an annual series of April Fools Day issue full of obviously fake games and game content, but because EGM was a professional publication, several of these have been mistaken for genuine news. The funny thing about this one is that there is some truth behind this one: when asked for his thoughts on the April Fools joke during an interview, Yuji Naka (creator of Sonic) actually said he was "pretty close" to getting into Melee, and Sonic would end up in the next installment onwards (sorry, Tails).
Another fun fact about this one: EGM actually gave away copies of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (Sonic's first GameCube title) to everyone that sent them videos beating 20 opponents in cruel melee (something that's a lot easier said than done).

Spoiler: A couple of other good ones by EGM

• Shen Long, Ryu's alleged sensei, being an unlockable fighter in Super Street Fighter II Turbo (this would eventually become true to an extent: Street Fighter IV would include Gouken, Ryu's sensei, in the roster, with a moveset similar to the one Shen Long hypothetically had as a reference to the rumors.
• "All Bonds" cheat in Goldeneye 007, a cheat code that let's you play as the other actors for James Bond in the N64 classic. This one also has some truth to it: data files in the game include face textures of Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton, and some years later employees at Rare have said they were planning on putting this in the final game, but couldn't due to licensing issues with using the actors' likenesses.

 

In Perfect Dark Rare planned to have a feature where you could plug in the gameboy camera into the transfer pack periphery and map pictures to face texture for multiplayer mode but it was ultimately dropped. If my memory serves you could use the transfer pack with the gameboy version of Perfect Dark to unlock some of the cheat codes.

 

You can thank Columbine and the moral panic over violent video games for the removal of that feature.

 

Back in the '90s the idea that Sonic could be in Nintendo games was a wat idea.

 

The earliest I remember hearing was there was some way to revive General Leo at his grave in FF6. RPGs in particular seemed to generate a lot of rumors like that.

 

You mean like the "revive Aeris Aerith" one?

 

There's one like that about "Infinite Space" too.

Miyamoto said back in September 2015 that Pikmin 4 was nearing the final stages of development.
It is now 2022 and the game has yet to be teased or shown to the public.
