Let me preface this by saying that I'm autistic. I didn't grow up with The Original Series and The Next Generation; TNG was in reruns for the most part when I was young and I saw only a few episodes of it before getting cable/satellite TV in my late teens/early adulthood.

For me, the Star Treks I grew up with were Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Of these, I prefer Voyager and I'm aware that I'm bashing a sacred cow here but I really just never cared for Deep Space Nine, because I'm autistic.

When I was a kid on the spectrum, it was just that DS9 was boring while Voyager was an adventurer romp through space going from one wacky planet or random encounter to another.

Looking back on it as an adult with a more informed opinion on the franchise as a whole, I rank the series thusly:
    1) The Next Generation
    2) The Original Series
    3) Enterprise
    4) The Animated Series
    5) Voyager
    6) Deep Space Nine

I have my reasons for liking Deep Space Nine the least. Namely, the driving and defining feature of Star Trek is optimism; I personally don't believe we'll ever make a world where people only do jobs because they want to in a post-capitalism non-economy, where all diseases are cured food is unlimited and barriers of prejudice are erased. I don't believe it anymore than I believe we'll make faster than light ships and find races of bangable aliens who look nearly identical to humans.

The thing is, the optimism is baked into the premise of Star Trek and when you remove that, make the story about how the future is a sucky place to live just like nowadays, all you have is any other scifi series. Enterprise had a lot of melodrama going for it too, but it at least gave me a more fun ride.

If Deep Space Nine were its own continuity/alternate universe, I'd be much more on board with it. The Mirror, Mirror universe has its place in Star Trek lore and I have no issue with a more mixed grimdark world of heroic Federation guys fighting a losing war against external evil and internal intrigue instead of just being "Everyone's the same, only with more goatees and everyone's a dick". The way Wicked is part of the overall Wizard of Oz franchise but isn't in continuity with the main series.

I'm well aware and cognizant of Voyager's faults, which are brought up all the time in Trek. I'm just saying DS9 isn't better or more mature just because it's darker and its captain is cool instead of Hillary Clinton Lite. I'm just saying I have more fun watching a typical episode of Voyager than I do of Deep Space Nine and that Voyager is more in line with the overall tone of the franchise, even with its relatively botched execution.

I'd call Voyager so bad it's good, even.

So what does everyone else think of Star Trek?

Considering saying that I preferred Voyager to Deep Space Nine without having the chance to really go into detail on why I preferred one ot the other was the last thing I did before getting banned from Kiwi Farms, I'm just glad I've finally had a chance to elaborate on it.

    I'm severely autistic.

TOS/TAS is OK, but it looks really dated now -- especially with using blinking lights for computers.

TNG is the best series to me. Despite being a product of the late 80s, it still seems like it can be in the 24th century, and it also has this sense of optimism for the future and human nature the other series don't.

DS9 was my favorite even though TNG was without a doubt the better show. Voyager was okay and had some great ideas but very few of the characters are likable or memorable aside from the Doctor and Seven of Nine. Enterprise sucked right up until it got canceled which is a shame because it was just getting good when they ended it. Also terrible theme song.

TOS was kinda hit or miss, there were some great episodes but the bulk of them were pretty terrible. I still haven't seen the animated series for some reason.

DS9's final shot of Jake and Kira, looking far beyond the stars at the wormhole and wanting the two people they care for the most to return, shows its optimism. Odo is with the Great Link forever, and the Sisko is not linear, but the station remains the same and the people left behind carry on. There's no brooding. Despite the past few years of pain and adversity, they continue because of their strength and faith, hoping for a better future. Healing takes time, but things will be better "for our sons; for all our sons," as one martyr would have put it.

And despite the Dominion War, things aren't as dreary as one may think:

The Federation is still intact -- they never gave up despite depleting ships and overwhelming statistics from Bashir's autistic friends.

Life has never looked better for more than half of Ferenginar's population. Life, clothing, and the pursuit of latinum is not applicable for everyone, regardless of lobe size.

The Dominion will learn from Odo. Accepting that victory isn't always life may bring new peace between them and the Alpha Quadrant.

Countless Klingon's died glorious deaths. Bajor remains independent. Morn still won't shut up.

Except for Cardassia. There's not much optimism there. But Garak's final line again shows the show's optimism. Will he see his friend Bashir again? He'd "like to think so. But one can never say." He knows things remain dire for his people, and he but that doesn't mean he's going to just roll over and lose hope.

I'm more of a TOS and TNG nerd. I've honestly not watched DS9 or Enterprise, and haven't seen all of VOY. The animated series was kinda cool and has some good moments in all its goofyness. I'm a super nerd when it comes to Wrath of Khan and Khan-related lore. Not Cumberbatch Khan though. He's ugly and makes me cry.

Having been a child of the 80's, this was a show my dad would turn to every weekend! I was simply bored with the whole affair, knowing I had to do something else or simply stay there an stare at the cathode set!

I think the best moments was when the film wasn't loaded in properly!

It did, we were VERY optimistic back then, and I enjoyed seeing this when it came on

Too late for me, Nickelodeon used to stick this one on too!

I actually really liked Enterprise. The problem I thought is a lot of the characters felt blank and generic. I've seen the whole series three times and I can't recall anything about Mayweather beyond he drove the ship. The only characters I thought were truly memorable were Archer and Phlox. It got better around season 3 but I think how retarded the xindi looked and were in concept sealed the show's fate despite the increase in quality.

EDIT: Also the entire concept, story, and execution of the temporal cold war was horrendous and nearly ruins the show.

Also it got cancelled right before the Romulan war which really pisses me off.

I've never watched ENT. How did it manage to nearly ruin it?

It's an entire sidestory that goes on until the first episode of Season 4 about time traveling people meddling in history. It's also the very first thing they cover in the pilot. I can't even begin to properly articulate the clustered mess the TCW was but I'll just tell you time travelling bat people made it so the Nazi's won the second world war at one point, I'm not kidding.

There were some animated episodes that were pretty decent: I think the one with Tribbles and the one with Harvey Mudd are worth a watch. TAS benefited from having the original voice actors, plus it was able to do things with animation that wouldn't have been possible with the special effects budget that the original series had.

NextGen was more of an easy optimism, where you can look around and see things have gotten better and can believe that things can get even better in the future. DS9 was more about holding on to that kind of optimism and having hope that even though everything seems kind of shit and hopeless right now, as long as you believe that if you never give up and keep standing up for what's right things will get better.
I have a soft spot for Voyager, I think it gets more shit than it really deserves tbh.
Mayweather was more memorable than fucking Reed though. At least Mayweather had the whole "I'm from a boomer family" backstory, I can't remember diddly-dick about Reed besides he jerks off over phase-pistols and torpedoes and "doesn't like to talk about himself".

What was the first series you saw?

I either saw TNG or TOS first. Probably the former.

I guess TOS? I was introduced to the series by the films, though if we're taking strictly the series the first one I saw was either DS9 or VOY when they were syndication. I'll be honest, I was actually working overnights when I saw them so I don't remember which one came first too well, but I know they ran through one series and then switched to the other.
