I'm honestly surprised we didn't have a thread on this already.
For those that don't know, Squirrel and Hedgehog is a cartoon series about crying furries fighting badass wolves and weasels with eye lasers, made by the North Korean government to brainwash their children through blatant propaganda. Despite being aimed at children (think nursery age), it is full of inappropriate violence and on screens deaths (including impalement (!) and suicide).

So feel free to discuss this fine piece of animated furry North Korean propaganda.

And believe it or not, this actually at one point had a legit english dub, with actual voice actors.

I remember years ago (this video is definitely very dated) I stumbled upon this video which featured a clip from a Russian cartoon which was apparently a bit controversial. Imagine the old Bugs Bunny cartoons or Tom And Jerry cartoons with the typically violent humour, only oddly friendlier. Or, a more accurate description would be, imagine a male cartoon character cross-dressing to fool his friend in a friendly cartoon where the cartoon rabbit doesn't immediately hit his friend with a hammer when he lets his guard down, and you can probably see why it was a bit controversial, especially in Russia.

It would be cool if there was a "fandub" community like the fansub community.

It's fascinating it happened at all, but I guess those Italian editors can work wonders out of this.

Oh yeah, here's a full playlist of what this company has done, though they haven't gotten past episode 26, so don't expect the wolves and Lt. Vixen to show up!

I wouldn't say "Nu, Pogodi!" was trying to be controversial, the point simply was a wolf going after a rabbit much in the way the coyote in the Road Runner cartoons keeps trying and failing constantly. The wolf doesn't necessary cross-dress all the time but they have done over a dozen episodes of this anyway. I first saw these way, way back when I was using KaZaA/Morpheus (anyone who remembers that, yeah, that was before BitTorrent), and it just showed up around searching for whatever I could get there, and it was rather interesting to see a series produced across the Iron Curtain that was well executed for a Soviet cartoon that was aping the American approach, though it's been said the creator of the series had never saw Tom & Jerry at all, having only been familiar with Disney films before.

Lord knows the voice casting for the female fox character would be a challenge!

Which is fair to say that is what it is, and to the DPRK, the right amount of indifference necessary to groom a new generation of soldiers.

Reminded this is an actual toy they've put out over there! I assume it predates the wolves' debut in the series assuming it's age.

Slightly OT, but I think while it seems ridiculous to us – now, especially since the Media Watchdog '90s when 'NO GUNS ONLY LASERS OR RIDICULOUS EDITING OR CUT IT' was law – American kids, even younger ones, and toy guns were perfectly normal. Especially around WWII but even well after. (And speaking of, you bet the US had its own militaristic propaganda.)

    ANYway...

Makes sense though that being mostly stuck in the '80s at the latest – otherwise still in that turn-of-the-last century warmongering mindset – Jong-Un and co. would still approve of instilling kids with that 'Us. vs. Them with bullets if not nukes' mentality. And colorful cartoons are still the best way to do it.

The Insult Backfire of S & Q's Western cult following (ironically enough) and attitude of 'Wolves are fresking badass' and 'Fox lady is hot' kind of hilariously undercuts its message. But if it works for current DPRK kids I guess we should still be worried.

Here are some other videos on the series:

Going to be off-topic here too, so just bear with me!

Yep, still playing by the same rule book set by Kim Il-Sung (or Kim Jung-Il, but I'm sure it's been there from the beginning).

It doesn't help that the sort of things people in the west latched onto with S&H aren't really compatible in the DPRK, both culturally and legally. They're using wolves to explain the strength of this enemy to the smaller critters of Flower Hill. The fox is used as a spy and plays the femme fatale to a T. These sorts of messages are very much ingrained in these types of films made over there. Accepting the series any other way would be seen as treason by the current government to anyone living there.

These cartoons are about conditioning, plenty of DPRK cartoons are guilty of that, though some not as obvious as others. One that caught my attention is another long-running series that has been produced by SEK Studio since the 1980's called "The Clever Raccoon Dog". The gist of the series is how smart the raccoon dog (or tanuki) is over his two friends, a bear and a cat, with how he solves certain problems or finds a way around a solution and explains it at the end of the episode. Much like S&H, it did managed to get an English dubbed release by Mondo TV (the first 57 episodes anyway, there's apparently over 60 right now), though they did do a decent job on this, at least keeping the original music intact. Here's some choice episodes.
