I'm hooked on DragonQuest Builders right now. It's got a lot of mechanics similar to Minecraft but it's unique enough to not just be a Minecraft clone.

I tried to pickpocket a prostitute in Kingdom Come, got caught attempting to do so, and killed her when she tried to alert the guards.

I then felt bad and reloaded.

I actually have SMod installed but considering it's just regular HL2 with new gameplay mechanics I don't see the point of going through HL2 again. Same for Brutal Half-Life, Half-Life 2 Update, the Cinematic Mod, etc.

I remember a ZP quote about the Half-Life 2 remaster that Half-Life fans seemed to rush to correct him on.

"It features commentary by people involved in the Half-Life fan community, rather than any of the people who actually worked on the game, which was disappointing. While someone who worked on the game might provide some interesting insights and criticisms of the game ten years after they've worked on it, fans and people who put in enough effort to be notable in the fan community will no doubt be fans of the game and the commentary will no doubt be the fans talking about how great the game is, the good times they had playing the game, and how influential it was to a number of people, because enjoying something is what defines a fan."

The second point might be debatable. I mean, in my experience fans of things tend to create sacred cows and sacrificial lambs. What fans tend to do, in my experience at least, is pick something that they don't like about the series they enjoy and endlessly talk about why exactly it is terrible amongst the fanbase (Sonic 06, the platforming section near the end of the original Half-Life, The Phantom Menace), and then pick something they adore about the series and endlessly talk about why the thing they like is good amongst the fanbase (Sonic 3, the gravity gun in Half-Life 2, Empire Strikes Back). So, what I suspect is that the commentary in the Half-Life 2 remastered thing was basically the same thing, probably someone talking about how awesome the Ravenholm section is, and then saying something like "Oh fuck, I hate this vehicle section, it's like, the one thing bad about this great game. Why the fuck didn't the developers make it better somehow?"

I haven't played Half-life in years, or any mods for it, so a lot of the games are a bit fuzzy in my mind. I do remember my first time buying a Half-Life game though. I was in a Gamestop and the bargain bin was absolutely filled with copies of Half-Life 2. I always just assumed that since they had so many unsold copies that the game was a piece of crap that nobody wanted, instead of the staff buying way too many copies because they overestimated how many console gamers had heard of the game at that point, and how many console gamers would actually buy the game. This was before the Half-Life episodes, the orange box, and the numerous memes online, and I remember that although the game was popular among PC gamers and older gamers, most people were unfamiliar with the series.

Anyways, one day I looked at the back of the box of one of these Half-Life 2 games (they were being sold for about $2 at this point, maybe I could have made a profit if I had bought them in bulk, stored them away and waited for the memes to make the game explode in popularity), and I was surprised to see that the back of the game literally said absolutely nothing about what the hell the game was about. "Gordon Freeman is back with a new adventure where things happen," "PC Gamer magazine gave this game five stars and called it a perfect game, and it also was awarded the Game Of The Year award by about 20 different websites and magazines," "This is the best game ever made, and a defining game of this generation," and stuff like that. Basically, I knew nothing about the game except that a number of people really seemed to like it, but for some reason Gamespot had a whole bunch of unsold copies because nobody wanted to buy it.

So anyways, I bought the game, played it for a few hours and was just feeling extremely bored while doing so. I wasn't really into the 'realism' of the game, with the slow opening bit and the kind of boring interactive cut scene things where you would be stuck in a room and have no way to leave until the characters were done talking, and the physics puzzles which only seemed to exist to show off the new engine for the game. Really, a number of designs choices in Half-Life 2 seemed to be about showcasing the new tech rather than make a fun game, which may have been why there seems to be a strong modding community for it. The story was filled with interesting plot points that never, or rarely, actually got resolved (ending the series on a cliffhanger was a dick move) and callbacks to earlier events from a game which I hadn't played at that point. So, I left the game wondering if everyone else had played an entirely different and much more fun game. I was even more confused when all the memes about the Half-Life series being the best game series ever appeared online and a number of my friends started telling me how amazing the series was.

These days, I look at the Half-Life games as being technically innovative, but not games I would ever sit down and play. I don't like the characters, I don't like the story and I'm not a huge fan of the gameplay. I can definitely see why people enjoy the games, but I've never enjoyed them all that much.

In between Half-Life 2 and it's mods I've been sneaking in some Doom. Mainly playing Russian Overkill with the Chillax mappack.

I just finished Yakuza 6 (and am very sad about it.) I only have a few extra odds and ends to wrap up before I’ve completed it to my liking. (Not going for 100% completion because fuck Mahjong.)

I’m kind of at a loss right now as of what to move on to. Money’s tight, so I’m not getting any new games, but I’ve got a bunch of other games that need attention:
    • Final Fantasy XV (Xbone): Dungeons, redo the DLC’s, Adamantoise, hunts, Royal Update stuff
    • Yakuza 0 (PS4): Missing a main story trophy so I’d have to go through New Game+, some mini-game odds n’ ends
    • Yakuza Kiwami (PS4): Haruka’s Trust Missions, a bunch of completion awards, some sub stories
    • Monster Hunter: World (Xbone): Pretty much everything - I’ve barely progressed at all
    • Yakuza 5 (PS3): Like 2 Chapters away from finishing the game, got distracted by chicken racing and also not as into the game as the other Yakuzies
    • Tokyo Jungle (PS3): I’m determined to get a 100 year pom run.

I've heard another Yakuza game came out earlier this year. Apparently it's got something to do with Fist of The North Star as well? Is it any good?

Yeah Hotoru ga Gotoku (I think). It’s only out in Japan right now. From my understanding and the little bit I’ve seen, it’s basically Fist of the Northstar with the voice cast from a Yakuza. I’m not a fan of Fist of the Northstar so I’m not sure how it is, tbh.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is out in America in August so that’s something to look forward to. I managed to get a Japanese copy with a gift pack back in December when it was released over there, but gave it to a friend, because I wanted the gift pack stuff. :D
