"The truth is a gripping, compelling, and surprisingly funny story of how a young girl infiltrated and used the fan fiction community to search for her brother by baiting their attention with a deliberately badly written tale, creating a 10-year mystery that garnered pop culture media attention and remained unsolved — until now."

I'm a bit intrigued to know how a badly written fanfic could help find one's own sibling...

This is probably some person claiming to be the real author. It's happened before.

I mean, yeah....I kinda *would* like to see how you go from "Writing a shitty fanfic" to "I found my brother...."

It doesn't matter if she really wrote it or not, as long as the take to find her brother is a great tale. To quote The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

I'm with @Uncle Frank on this one. This isn't even close to the first time someone's tried to claim that they're Tara before although this is the most high-effort of them. I get the suspicion that the story about finding her brother was added into this because the story of someone writing My Immortal purely as a troll fic is always going to be worse than the hilarious thought that this was real. Using a shitty fanfic to find her brother is a bit ridiculous.

Just a regular Noodle Incident, no matter what the actual story is it's become so much of a legend that any explanation is going to be underwhelming compared to what we come up with in our minds. Better for it to stay unsolved tbh.

I just personally want to see how someone, anyone, can turn the narrative of "Yeah, I totes wrote a deliberately bad fan fic on purpose" into "Well, I was able to find my brother because of this shitty fan fic".

Could this all be bullshit? Yeah, it could, but I can't lie and say I'm not intrigued...

I personally liked to think the author was just J.K. Rowling herself trolling the fanbase with a shitty fanfic.

Little fun fact, someone once pm'd an account I created to publish fanfiction back in 2005 when I was really young. That person asked me how I write such terrible fanfiction and said they were doing it for 'research'. Apparently, some other people got a similar pm, mostly authors on the Spyro section of the site. I was 11 or 12 at the time, so I was incredibly offended that someone thought my fanfiction was terrible, yet baffled at someone asking how to write something equally bad. I think that my account was something like SpyroFan9 or something stupid.

Anyways, My Immortal ends up being written and becoming incredibly popular a while later, and in the Spyro archive some people started wondering if Tara was actually that person who sent the pm. Probably not, but it did lead to some guys claiming that their stories were the inspiration for My Immortal, and one guy writing a long 'confession' claiming that he wrote My Immortal as an attempt to troll people and claimed that they were inspired by the terrible fanfictions on the Spyro archive.

Why Spyro, you might ask? Well, looking back, the Spyro archive was being flooded with terrible fanfiction written by 'edgy' kids (like myself) after the Spyro reboot gave him a new backstory and the games a darker tone. That being said, 2006 was the year of 'darkness' and 'edginess' in the fanfiction community, every archive was filled with edgy teens writing stories similar to My Immortal (and every teen who wrote those stories claimed that they were actually 'trolling' people with the terrible stories when they attempted to join the trolling communities in 2007-2011). It's not exactly a ludicrous statement to say that 'Tara' was being completely serious when she published her 'masterpiece'.

"I purposely wrote a shitty fanfic to troll the fanboys/girls" really seems to be the writing equivalent to "I was just *pretending* to be retarded, and you trolls fell for it!"

Personally, there are obviously some people who do 'troll' people by making shitty fanfics. The problem with those fanfics is the same as the problem with 'parody' boy bands that were around at the same time as Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, the 'parodies' are pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing. I mean, making fun of a fanfiction filled with typos by making a fanfiction filled with typos is like making fun of a moldy grilled cheese sandwich by making a moldy grilled cheese sandwich.

Also, what's with the edit to my comment? It might be just me, but you seem to be making little jabs at a number of forum members lately. What's up with that? If you're ashamed to be around us, you can leave the site.

I'm.....not really sure what you mean by that. I was quoting a specific part of your post because it made more sense then to quote the whole post for one point I was going to make.

And taking jabs at forum members? You'll need to forgive me if I don't know what you're talking about.

Didnt her brother come forward on Kiwi and say all of it wasn't true? He wasn't long lost and she had a lot of problems? Like, how would a terrible fanfiction result in finding her brother? Wouldn't she name drop in the story, like write Ebony has a brother named "_____" or list the places the brother would know?

People also tried to say she deserved support since she was lesbian and Native American and writing books with LGBTQ+/POC characters- only to reveal she was white? (And lets not forget all the homophobic/gay fetishing/ racist things she wrote in the story) Also Ebony, despite being written as "bi" was straight as heck, only commenting how pretty her female friends looked, but was clearly sexually attracted to men (and men doing it with other men)

No offence to the girl, but "I'm the real author of My Immortal, this is the true story of what happened and why I wrote this," loses credibility when paired with "I used the fanfiction to try to find my long lost brother."

Also, she's not even the first girl to come out and say she was the author of the story.

Oh I know, I refer to it as "The Anastasia Effect"- just like when it was possible Princess Anastasia was alive, many women came forward and claimed they were the princess when they knew they were not- I believe a few truly believed they were her (or just good at scams). Only few were believed to some point. With the mysterious "Tara"- many have come forward to try and claim they were the true author, but were usually debunked fast or admitted to trolling. Before this "true" author was found, someone found a terrible book with a title similar to "My Immortal" and people found it to be "Tara-y",finding her page and seeing she listed JK Rowing and Stephanie Meyer as inspirations (and I believe tara or 'raven' wrote a Twilight Fanfic), then it was quickly cast aside for some random person saying "Lol yeah it was me" and her info was quickly found- I believe she claimed it just to get attention for her books she was writing

It's kind of funny that coming forward as the author now is pretty much impossible, yet people do it anyways. How do you prove that you're the original author? The original account and the story are gone. The best that you can do is to try to come up with a convincing story.

But, does it really matter at this point? I kind of look at it as being a similar situation to that of Von. The reason why they gained a strong following for their cult classic demo Satanic Blood is because it sounded so terribly produced and notoriously repetitive. When they reunited, re-recorded Satanic Blood with modern production standards and released an album of much less repetitive but pretty generic music, people basically just went 'meh'. Stripped of their gimmick of writing terrible songs with demo quality audio, the band became (at best) a very generic metal band with nothing to distinguish themselves from any other band. If this Rose girl is really Tara, then she basically transitioned from writing a fan fiction that was so bad that it briefly caused a sensation on the internet and gained a following which is still going strong to this day, to simply writing average stories that nobody paid much attention to.

I pretended to be Tara once when I was young and retarded. I'm sure this person is going through a similar phase.
