I know this forum's mostly for discussing shows that are so bad they're good, but I think I can justify this one.

While Doctor Who's a great show, recently (at least in my opinion) the quality has taken a major hit. Series 9 was much better than Series 8, but it still wasn't up to scratch and I don't have high hopes for Series 10.

Also, Classic Doctor Who is infamous for its terrible special effects. While I think the storytelling makes up for it a lot of the time, cheesy effects, cheesy lines and cheesy direction are all a common sight in Classic Doctor Who. Personally the bad effects add to the appeal for me but there's definitely a lot of cringe to be had:

    Also, this fucking thing:

So let's get to discussing Doctor Who. Moments that made you laugh, moments that made you cringe. Good episodes, bad episodes, guilty pleasures. All are welcome here.

    Allons-y!

For bad special effects, it's hard to beat The Mara.

True, but the redone special effects for the DVD were fantastic:

Also, I think the dinosaurs from "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" give the Mara a run for its money:

Did it bug anybody else when the main character reached through a magic hole in the wall to retcon the entire episode? The cheesy stuff from the past I love, but I kinda question who made that decision. Or maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention and it wasn't a narrative cop out? I'm rambling, but perhaps they should have dropped the serialized format much earlier and done away with some of the padding. Anyways, I seem to recall a YouTube channel called Babelcolour or some such that occasionally highlights the goonier parts.

Every season has been shitty and flat-out unwatchable up until the 11th doctor. Then it's suddenly like they have a budget & can write actual science fiction & every episode from thereon is a Robert Zemeckis movie. It'd be the only time the BBC did anything competently, apart from covering up their pedophile ring for the better half of a century, that is.

"The Ark In Space" is a damn fine story. Though I think "Attack of the Bubble Wrap" would've been a better title.

I disagree with so much of this it's difficult to know where to start. The pedpphile ring bit's spot-on though.

I just found the show unappealing myself. Then again, that might be because it was made up on the fly for the classic episodes (lookin' at you regenerations), I wasn't interested in digging through decades of backlog that is partially burned away in unholy fire, and it had the budget of a chinese sweatshop worker's earnings. But the fuck do I know, I watch the Star Trek.

Though I do like the Autons, if only because killer mannequins are an interesting and creative way to spend 10 quid on your props.

I tried to get into the show by watching the very first episodes once. All the show seemed to be was a dull narrative with crew members getting kidnapped. I guess I'm more used to Star Trek too.

I honestly wouldn't recommend starting the show with the very first episode. I know that seems logical, but for a show about time travel it's really not that important. Doctor Who has been on so long that it went through quite a few producers so there are lots of "jumping on" points where a new producer took over.

Personally, I started watching the show when it came back in 2005 - I wasn't really aware of it before then. While I was waiting for the Christmas Special with David Tennant to air, I picked up the story "Earthshock" on DVD. That one's a great introduction to the Classic Series and I recommend it to anyone wanting to give the Classic Series a whirl for the first time. It got me hooked on Classic Doctor Who, but it wasn't until about six months later that I went back and watched "An Unearthly Child" (the first story of the show).

Personally, I'd recommend starting with Christopher Eccleston and if you like the show after that, going back and watching the Classic Series. I think something like "Spearhead from Space" is a better starting point than "An Unearthly Child".

I have a serious dislike of the revived series, it advertises itself as sci-fi, but really it is fantasy and it has way too much magic in it for my liking.

You know if you rearrange the letters in Timelash it spells Lameshit.

I enjoy the show alot. Series 8 was great, Series 9 was amazing but 6 and 7 tarnished it's reputation imo. Sadly I think it's Peter that they don't like, and it's a shame he's leaving.

All of the best serial talk is bullshit - Planet Of The Spiders is the best serial. If not that, Robot.
Best Modern episode is 11th Hour.

Just watched the 90s movie. A huge shock for me, as imo it is the best episode of Doctor Who ever. (Story a bit weak but great acting)

I think it's a shame Paul McGann only appeared on screen twice as the Doctor. I've been listening to his Big Finish audio stories and he's fantastic - that film doesn't showcase his best work.

Just got Revisitations 3, Mannequin Mania and the Key to time dvds. Really just got them for a few episodes. I'll post my thoughts here soon.

Late reply, but I've seen parts of a few of the later episodes, including some from just a few years ago or so.

Like the first episode, all the ones I've seen always seem to involve the crew getting captured or trying to escape from something. Do any of the episodes revolve around the thrill of exploration and discovery?

That's not really the point of the show - the Doctor lands somewhere in space or time, there's bad shit going on and the Doctor fixes it (or tries to). The fun comes with the inventiveness of the storylines. There may be a lot of episodes where the crew gets captured or have to escape, but it's the stuff that's woven around that which is cool.

Really? I liked Full Circle and whatever the one right after that with the space vampires quite a bit.
